... Sadly Wookie Hole and Cheddar Gorge were no-go areas for us and our pupster, but I did find a couple of other possibilities, namely the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth and Escot Park at Ottery St Mary (both in Devon). Therefore, pup in tow, we duly set of one sunny July day to explore the possibilities ... Read review

Amaze yourself

Advantages: Lots to see and do for all ages. Lovely scenery. Pleasant environment.
Disadvantages: The eco-toilets are a little on the "ripe" side and for the brave only.

...Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth and Escot Park at Ottery St Mary (both in Devon). Therefore, pup in tow, we duly set of one sunny July day to explore the possibilities of a good day out at Escot Park.

== WHAT IS THERE TO DO AT ESCOT? ==

Situated in East Devon, Escot is the home of Kennaway family, and has been for over two hundred years. However, instead of doing the usual thing and opening their Georgian Stately House ...
...The part of Escot open to the general public is an area of parkland, where they have played on the great natural beauty of the area, and complimented rather than spoiled it. They’ve done a very nice job of making a delightful country park for families to enjoy nature at its best.

We decided to visit as I rather liked the sound of the maze at Escot, and the gardens and surrounding woodlands sounded pretty interesting too. Added to which ... more

Brilliant forest play park for children (Escot Park (Devon))

Advantages: Lots of outdoor activities for children
Disadvantages: Some not so nice toilets

I have lived near Escot park all of my life and I am ashamed to say that I had never been until recently. I was invited to go here during half term, five of us went (two adults, three children) and I have to say what a great day out we had here, I was pleasantly surprised. I always thought it was just a posh house with nice garden (national trust type thing) and I could not have been more wrong, its a country park for families to enjoy. There is ...
...everything. Admission prices for Escot are £6.95 for a adult, family of two adults & two children £24, dogs 50p, children under 3 free. If you think you may end up visiting here a few times a year its probably worth getting a year pass, for two adults & two children is £52, you only need to visit three times to make this pay for itself. These passes also give you discounts in the shops etc. A slight downside to the park though is some of the toilets, ...

Devon Cliffs

Advantages: cheap, clean
Disadvantages: not much entertainment

This is a Haven holiday park near Exmouth in Devon. Some friends invited me there, and I thought, yeah, OK, I would go because it was cheap, but I wasn't really expecting it to be that good. However, when I got there, I was pleasantly surprised. We were staying in a caravan which was surprisingly comfortable and well furnished, and overlooked the beach. There were plenty of shops and restaurants on the site, so I didn't go hungry! The only real drawback was the lack of entertainment there. However, it made a good base to go out and visit other places and theme parks in the area. Good places to visit are The World of Country Life, which is just outside the front gate, and Escot House, which is about 20 minutes away by car. Crealy Adventure park is also good for kids. ...

Review of Devon (England)

Home (and Away)

Advantages: Superb range of accommodation for every budget. No hidden extras. Many allow pets.
Disadvantages: I really cannot think of any.

and quiet, if somewhat isolated (the nearest shop was at least two miles away, so you definitely needed a car to make the most of your holiday). The nearest village was Churchingford in Somerset, which is more or less slap bang between the towns of Taunton in Somerset and Honiton in Devon. It was an ideal base for visiting attractions in both Devon and Somerset, and we managed to visit Glastonbury, Honiton, Taunton, Chard, Wells, Sidmouth, Beer and Seaton, as well the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth and Escot Park in Ottery St Mary. The accommodation at Little Royston was spacious and clean. I?ve hired holiday cottages before and been disgusted at the state they have been left in (the French holiday cottage with black pubic hairs all over the floor springs to mind?), but no complaints here. The property consisted of three good sized double ...
