I've worked in Espionage for a few months now and am ready to enlighten you all about probably one of the best clubs in Edinburgh.
Espionage is situated on Victoria Street but can also be accessed from the Cowgate. It is on 5 levels with 5 bars and 4 (apparently) different themes of music and drinks.
When you enter from Victoria Street you will find yourself in The Lizard Lounge, this is on the top two levels. The upper level has a bar close to the door, (usually with only 1 member of female staff working) and a seating area to the rear. The lower level of Lizard Lounge, appropriatly named minus 1, has a small bar (usually 2 female members of staff) and a seating area. This area seems to be very popular with hen and stag parties as it is usually quiet til around midnight and they can have the place to themselves. The Lizard Lounge doesn't have a DJ so no requests but there is a mix of music played from a computer controlled by management. The "drink theme" on these two levels is whisky and bourbon and you will find a variety available there.
Down one level brings you to Kasbar which specialises in Gin and has easy RnB/hip hop playing from a computer system n the office so again, no requests. Kasbar looks like it has an Eastern theme with booths around the walls for seating 2-4 people and small stools around the square bar which is situated in the middle of the floor. Kasbar will usually have between 2 and 5 female staff working on it.
If you venture down another level you will find Pravda which specialises in vodka and has a huge variety available. The music theme there is cheesy pop and chart music but there is a DJ at the corner of the dance floor so requests are possible. It has a problem with a smell of sick though which you can notice immediately at the beginning of the night but it seems to get fainter as the night goes on. It offers a big dance floor and also a big bar which is usually staffed by around 2 up to 8 male members of staff. There is a good amount of seating available all around the floor. Pravda is by far the busiest floor.
Down one more level brings you to the very bottom floor, Mata Hari, my personal favourite. This bar specialises in Tequila and music played there is generally RnB/Hip Hop. It is possible the biggest bar in close competition with Pravda. There is a DJ on this floor by the dance floor and there is ample seating in the way of big cushioned alcoves to seat groups of people. You will find between 1 and 8 mostly female staff on the bar at any one time. You will also find the cloakroom on this floor and the back door onto the Cowgate.
The cloakroom is popular with customers and it costs only £1 per item. If you put a bag in with a jacket, you're bag will be free.
So that's all the bars described. So for the essential details. Espionage opens at 7pm until 3am 7 days a week. During the festival and over christmas and new year the opening is extended until 5am. Entry is free at all times.
Dress code is smart, i.e. no trainers, tracksuit bottoms or baseball caps.
Drinks are served right up til closing time which I find to be a huge benefit considering most of the clubs in Edinburgh won't serve you after 2.30am. Drinks are priced at around £2.80 for a spirit and a dash, £2.80 - £3.20 for bottled beers and alcopops and £2.80 to £3.00 for a pint.
There are often selected drinks at £2.00 before 11 at weekends, not sure about through the week. They hold "Sinful Sundays" on Sundays (duh!!) where cocktails are 2 for 1 all night at £5.50. There is a good cocktails and shooter menu available all week.
There are toilets situated on every floor.
There is also a member of security and cameras on every floor so you will find that there is little or no trouble to ruin your night out.
Staff all have uniform (all black with red or black apron) so are easily recognised and happy to help :-)

Insider information, eh? Very informative. I'll have to remember and check it out if I'm ever in the rival city (but bearing in mind I haven't been there for about five years, it'll probably be a while!) Paula x
