It would not surprise me in the slightest if you haven't heard of this little town in the Western Costa del Sol.
I, however, have been to this place three times as my boyfriend's mum has an apartment here (they are spanish). This apartment is located in the main town, which is where all the residents live and so there are not too many tourists in this part.
As you have probably guessed Estepona is sort of split into two parts. There is the main town where the residents live and the tourists with the holiday apartments in which I have to say has the best beach in Estepona. In the main part, which is where I spent most of my time, there are many shops and restaurants. There are a few which we have been over the three times I have been, although I can't remember all the names of the restaurants off the top of my head but a few I would recommend are La Gamba, La Palma, China
Town and La Rada. My favourite restaurant has got to be one of the many ones which are on the beach, especially at night. Picture the scene, sitting at a table for two eating some of the wonderous food such as calamari, pasta, mussels, chicken, steaks, fish, etc. whilst the sea is lapping quietly at the beach and the sky is beautifully clear and shining with stars.
Other great things about Estepona is the fact that there are many banks dotted all over for your convenience. There is also an internet cafe which also has telephone and fax facilities. This is actually the best place to use the telephone as you make your call then receive a bill so you don't have to worry about being cut off. At the back of this place is a pool hall with arcade machines. We spent quite a lot of time here last year as we had to call our insurance company quite a bit due to my boyfriend getting salmonella, which reminds me. Never eat anything, especially chicken, from a place called Gringos Bar. This place is separated into two, there is a bar underground and a place you can get food from on the street level. This is where my boyfriend got his salmonella from. Just a warning.
As for entertainment I would recommend visiting the theme park called Tivoli World in Torremolinos which I would recommend getting a taxi to as the nearest bus stop is in the heart of Torremolinos and the park is on the outskirts. It can be a bit expensive but believe me it is worth it as it is so much better than any english theme park. There are so many rides to enjoy, most of them are quite scary though and I'm not into these type but it is still very enjoyable. My favourite "ride" is actually a walk through called "Passage Del Terror" (excuse my spanish, not sure if it's spelt exactly like that). Basically you are guided through by a monk who is very scary looking (he also speaks english). He leaves you on your own at some points to face the horror villians alone (best to go in large groups as it is very scary). You have these villians from scary films jump out at you such as the killer from Scream, Freddy, Jason, the girl from the excorsist, etc. When you see this last one she is tied to a large bed (or so you think) in a room and when you are trying to walk past her she leaps and you. No matter how many times I could tell you how scary this is you really would have to go in it yourself to find out.
It is also worth going the two hours by bus to Gibralta. I recommend when arriving in Gibralta (don't forget your passports) you take a minibus tour called the Rock Tours. This takes you all the way up the rock to see the famous apes and also to see the natural and manmade caves which were used in the world wars and another war which I'm afraid I've forgotton, sorry about that. In the town there is the Neopolian Graveyard which actually only contains a few soliders who dies in that war. There are also a range of english shops and restaurants such as Marks and Spencers to Pizza Hut but there are also little spanish gift shops. I would recommend getting any alcohol here as it is so much cheaper than at home and the accept Euros or Pounds but the latter is preferable.
Marbella is a place which is also worth a visit to marvel at their beautiful villas, gorgeous beaches, lovely parks and of course the wide range of shops. There are also horse drawn taxis ready to take you around Marbella to show you the sights in a more relaxed way.
Closer to Estepona there is a safari park and an aqua park in the nearby Mijas.
Back in Estepona there is a little train which takes you around the whole of Estepona to show you what they have to offer. One thing I would recommend in Estepona is to visit "Playa del Christo" which is a wonderful beach in the tourist part with it's white sands and clear water, this is THE beach to go to.
The nearest airport to Estepona is Malaga which is about an hour by car but about two by bus. The airlines which travel there are EasyJet, Monarch, Air Europa, Swiss International Airlines, British Ariways, Aer Lingus and Iberia.
All in all I would say this is a wonderful place to stay for all the family.
