Etap Amsterdam Airport opened in early 2003 and like several of Etap's hotels it is within walking distance of an Ibis Hotel. The price at this hotel is 55 Euros per night and an extra 5 Euros for continental breakfast which is buffet style, but a little bit basic. Coffee is typically paint stripper French Style. There were white and brown soft rolls, white & brown bread (British Toast Size), European Toast Bread, Jam, Chocolate Spread, Honey, Peanut Butter, Spreading Cheese, and the last 2 days there was a choice of pates. On the beverage side there was tea, paint stripper coffee, hot chocolate, fruit and herbal teas, milk and fresh orange juice.
There are vending machines in the foyer, one serving different beverages, the other serving, sweets, chocolate and fizzy drinks/Heineken lager and a cigarette machine, and a car park machine.
Etap hotel guests are also allowed to eat in Ibis restaurants, the nearby Ibis Amsterdam Airport offers an American style diner, Pizza/Pasta and L' Estaminet (French style bistro)
There is a free shuttle bus from Schiphol Airport to both the Etap and Ibis Hotels, a real boon for the budget conscious and saves on extortionate taxi fares (Stand A9-A13) On looking at the Etap guide, I find that the Amsterdam Airport Etap is one of the most expensive out of the 311 hotels, Perhaps that this is a sneaky way to pay for the services of the 'Free' Shuttle bus ?
In Etap Hotels there is no room key or swipe card to enter a room, but on arrival you are allocated a six figure PIN number to unlock the door of your room, this was to be an advantage for me during my 5 night stay there. In the room is a large double bed and a bunk bed, which is not suitable for children under the age of 6 years old. There is a fairly adequate shower unit and separate toilet. There is some hanging space for clothes, but no 'knicker drawer'. There is a television in the room It currently shows
Netherlands 1, 2, 3 RTL 4 & 5 SBS Yorin ARD (Germany) ZDF (Germany) WDR (Germany) BBC World, Like the World Service with pictures CNN (Rolling News) Eurosport Rai Uno (Italy) Portuguese TV A French Channel Canal Plus Red & Blue MTV (Music) Room and Hotel Information (Mainly related to the Ibis Hotel but relayed to the Etap too) Flight Departure Board for Schiphol Airport relayed via the Dutch Teletext Service 4 Radio Channels Radio 1 (Like the World Service) Classic (Classical Music) Radio 538 (Pop Music) Sky Radio (Also pop music)
There is no telephone nor a modem plug for a laptop computer in the room but there are computer services in the foyer on payment at various levels on a card for internet use.
Despite the fact that in most of the other Etap Hotels there is a limited time of reception hours, there is actually a 24 hour reception at this particular Etap Hotel.
All in all, the Etap is not a bad hotel if you just want a couple of nights rest, and you're budget conscious and you want a quick and free gateway to Amsterdam and other parts of the Netherlands but I think I'll stick with the Ibis.
