When I first moved to Strasbourg I had no accommodation and had to live in a hotel for a little while. Fortunately someone had recommended the Etap hotel and it was a great place.
The hotel is located opposite the station, across the grassy area and gave me a great view from my window. There was a little traffic noise but not enough to disturb you. There's a Mc Donald's nearby as well as another restaurant (I forget the name) which offers a discount to those staying in the hotel. Being opposite the station, it's well located for getting the train or tram somewhere, or alternatively you can just walk.
The room was about €46 a night and when my friend also arrived, it was only a few quid more to add her into my room. Most of the rooms consist of a double bed with a single bunk on top, but because I was there for quite a long stay, I was put into a more spacious room which had a 4th bed (a single). I don't think much of the interior design (I wouldn't have put white, blue, purple and orange together) but the room was clean and comfortable which is what matters. It was also air conditioned (thankfully since it was summer) and had a nice little bathroom.
The staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful and there's a secure room where you can put your luggage for €2 if you need somewhere to leave it before you check in or after you check out. Breakfast is €5 a day but I never had it myself so I couldn't tell you what it was like. There was also a TV in the room, though I didn't actually watch it.
The Etap Hotel in Strasbourg is part of the Etap chain, and I was so impressed with it that when I went to Paris a few months later, I booked a room in one of their other hotels there. It was just as good, so I'd recommend not only this particular hotel, but the whole chain.
Advantages: Clean, cheap and can be well located Disadvantages: none
...Moved onto Etap at Bern - this is again easy to find. Follow the straight ahead signs to the Wankdorf stadion (yes the name is correct - i have pictures to prove it) and the Etap is located with a Novotel and IBIS in one huge building. Right opposite on Mingerstrasse (yes - I have pics to prove this as well) is the tram to the city centre. This was a much posher Etap. You park in the £9 a night car park (yes a little steep but no other real option) ... ...car park to the Etap level. Here there was a receptionist and you were given a credit card type entry system. No complicated codes here. Room very pleasant - Cable TV included - all Swiss, German and French channels. Breakfast a fancier affair as well - more choice.
My only quibble re the Bern hotel was that when i needed to use the Internet i was told to go to the Novotel hotel who said that I could have 1/2 hr on the internet for £19. It was expensive ...
