Booked 4 hotels from the Accor group - 2 of which were Etap. Never stayed in them before so didn't know what to expect.
Arrived in Strasbourg - very easy instructions to follow and car parking available at hotel. Next door is McDonalds and over the road is IBIS. Right on the tram line to the city centre as well. Excellent.
Hadn't realised that I would have to put my credit card into a machine to get the keycode to the main door and the room. After realising that I didn't have the pin code of the credit card (which fortunately i had remembered to bring the right one) i ummed and aahhed about using the machine. i did and by fluke my pin code wasn't asked for. Door code was isued on a piece of paper - like a credit card receipt - and it said DON'T LOSE! Next bit of fun was getting the main door open - tried several times, boyf got v v v cross with me and door and eventually with help of French old couple the door opened and room was found. From that point all was fine.
Breakfast the next day was basic - tea/coffee, bread, marg, jam and croissants. No fancy fruit or ham like at IBIS. Bread was a little stale....
Moved onto Etap at Bern - this is again easy to find. Follow the straight ahead signs to the Wankdorf stadion (yes the name is correct - i have pictures to prove it) and the Etap is located with a Novotel and IBIS in one huge building. Right opposite on Mingerstrasse (yes - I have pics to prove this as well) is the tram to the city centre.
This was a much posher Etap. You park in the £9 a night car park (yes a little steep but no other real option) and use the lift either from the main entrance or car park to the Etap level. Here there was a receptionist and you were given a credit card type entry system. No complicated codes here. Room very pleasant - Cable TV included - all Swiss, German and French channels. Breakfast a fancier affair as well - more choice.
My only quibble re the Bern hotel was that when i needed to use the Internet i was told to go to the Novotel hotel who said that I could have 1/2 hr on the internet for £19. It was expensive because they have to supply you with a modem connection card. I didn't bother!!!
These hotels are cheap, generally easy to find and not that fancy.Great for if you are touring and 3 can sleep in the rooms - double bed and single above on a bunk. I liked them and would use them again even tho breakfast not that great - was only 2 euros tho!
