Who Wants to Be a Maths Genius ..U..

Advantages: Clear and lucid language; Suitable for laypersons
Disadvantages: Doesn't delve deep enough for the mathematically knowledgeable

history to the modern day. Many of the greats are introduced: Pythagoras, Euclid, Euler, Hilbert and of course Pierre de Fermat! Formal proofs are left out, but more accessible material like Euclid's infinity of primes are included. Diagrams are present in abundance and complement Singh's succint language, so the reader is never bogged down. "Fermat's Last Theorem" is an excellent example of readable mathematics for the general public. It may even help to erase those painful memories of algebra from your school days! **UPDATE 7 Feb 2001** Check out the comments page for an interesting discussion on whether Fermat himself really had a proof. Disadvantages: The special features have more potential, could do with improvement.

extrapolating this knowledge to the study of the stock market, hypothesising that this system of seemingly random numbers may like nature have a pattern. From Max's perspective the stock market is akin to a living organism. Characters & Plot: Max is the personification of his own mind. He is a Reclusive, mildly obsessive and paranoid character, which manifests itself in his delusional hallucinations. He is a mathematical prodigy who from childhood has suffered from terrible migraines. The explanation for this is in the form of a quote scattered throughout the film and is indicative of Max's personality. "When I was a little boy my mother told me not to stare into the sun. So once when I was six I did" Max lives in a flat which is hardly a fit living space as its dedicated solely to his homemade computer Euclid, (name has significance ...
