Anyone who started driving in a virtually penniless state will be familiar with this scenario, In my early driving days, I owned old cars, the type that scraped through the MOT and got you from A to B, but for those runs over about 100 miles, were not really an option.

I started off hiring cars from a local dealer, as I didn’t own a credit card, and then progressed to the larger dealers who were much cheaper with a little help from my father’s credit card and a friendly assistant at National until the day I had a tyre blow-out in the middle of nowhere, long before the days when mobile phone signals had wide coverage and in the days when their breakdown support insisted on not answering their telephones. Needless to say I was not a happy bunny, particularly when they rang my mother claiming that the car had been delivered to a depot in Kent rather than Swansea, with her heart condition, it was a good job she had only seen me half hour before and knew I was safely back at home, despite their initial help the novelty had worn off.

Thankfully I then got myself a decent car, and had no need of rentals until the point when my radiator blew out on a very cold and wet Sunday afternoon, and then started my love affair with Europcar, who had a depot 30 miles from my house where I could get hold of a Vauxhall Vectra on a Sunday afternoon.

Who says time moves on, when my other half recently put petrol in my diesel car en-route to Alton Towers, (on a Sunday) the nearest place I could get a car was one of the London Airports, nowhere in Wales could provide me with one.

And on to Europcar themselves;
My first paid for UK experience of this company was when I discovered at the EasyJet check-in desk at Gatwick airport that I needed to return home to complete some very urgent work, leaving my other half to tootle off to Madrid on his own, and me back down the M4 to Swansea.

The even bigger downside was that I had to return to Gatwick on the Saturday to collect him, for some reason, driving back down the M4 at breakneck (not) speed, I decided that whilst my little chug-a-boom non-turbo diesel Peugeot, purchased to beat exorbitant insurance after two unfortunate accidents, was fine for around town/ local driving, but certainly didn’t have the oomph and pizzazz of my beautiful, and much missed top of the range Carina. Thus, I decided to hire a ‘nice’ car for a couple of days, particularly as I had somehow talked myself into taking Tasha and her friend to Thorpe Park whilst waiting for Martin’s flight.

BOOKING
Bookings can be made by contacting your local branch, or their call centre on a national rate number - 0870 607 5000.

A little tip here, if you ring you local branch and it is shut, you will automatically be redirected to their national call centre for the price of a local rate call.

Like most good companies these days, Europcar offer preferential rates to customers who book on-line, and you can reserve vehicles at any of their world-wide locations.

Their site is ridiculously easy to navigate, you can book cars at any of their outlets across the world and you simply need to provide a debit/ credit car to secure the booking, and provide them with your full name, a contact number and a valid e-mail address

I checked on their website, and was offered a Ford Mondeo for less than £60 for two days – now whilst I am definitely not a fan of the Ford motor car in any shape or size, for that price I got to drive my fast and large car, so went ahead and booked it – the website do advise you to read the terms and conditions before booking and it is advisable as you discover exactly what your charge covers, or should I say what it doesn’t cover.

Listed below (from the website) are rates for additional, uncovered daily charges:

• Additional Driver £7.05
• Excess Charge Waiver £8.30
• Super Personal Accident & Effects Cover £6.25
• Third Party Plus £4.58
• Top Up Cover (includes Third Party Plus, Damage Waiver Plus, Super Personal Accident and Effects Cover, 1 free additional driver) £13.79
• Young Driver Cover (age 23-25) £7.05

The system presents you with a confirmation of order and details of your booking; you will also receive e-mail confirmation which arrived within about 5 seconds of completing the process. Impressive, the e-mail also holds details of any additional charges you may want to consider such as those listed above.

It is easy to see, that what appears to be, on the face of it, a very cheap deal, can very rapidly turn into something much more expensive.

SCORE: 10/10 – Easy to book, their website is ‘pips’ to use, and fully navigable by keyboard for someone with restricted ability to use the mouse.

COLLECTION AND THE SERVICE
To complicate matters even further, when I booked the car, I had elected to return it on a Sunday, and guess what?........

Europcar’s Swansea office is shut on Sundays – this was not good. Then, being the very nice young lady that the assistant was, she offered me a ‘deal’ where I could have the car for three days for £78 plus the excess waiver of £8.30 per day. Whilst this does seem quite high, it removes the need for a small matter of a £500 deposit, and problems in the event of dispute over any damage to the car, what the hell.

When collecting the car, if booked via the web, you will be required to present the relevant credit car. If taking the excess waiver, £150 is pre-authorised and 'blocked' on your credit card, no monies are actually taken until you return the vehicle.

Cars are despatched at Swansea with a tank full of petrol (could be diesel or unleaded - make sure you know which), and should be returned in the same manner, if you fail to do so, you will find yourself being charged at around 20p a litre more than the market price to refill the tank.

This is not the case overseas though, where I have had tanks, full, half full, and virtually empty, with the hirer required to return the car filled to the same level, not quite as easy if the tank is not full to start with.

SCORE – 11/10
Yes I know it is not realistic – but this young lady has evidently been trained in the art of customer service and relationship marketing.

WHAT DID I GET FOR MY MONEY?
The assistant was very surprised when I stated that I had booked a Mondeo, as Europcar no longer actually rent Fords in the UK, and instead for my troubles I had a Volkswagen Bora; thankfully I am not writing an op on the car, as for the sake of two days I wouldn’t know where to start, apart from to say that I fell in love with this beautiful piece of silver machinery. I was quite passionate about the VW Golf (very much a ladies car) until I drove this. It was a Turbo Diesel injection with Air conditioning and power Steering and 6 gears, thus when driving on the motorway, I was comfortably sitting on the speed limit (would I break the law?) at around 2000 Rev’s.

Needing a car for a few days this weekend, I have again booked with EuropCar – 3 days for £61.35 for a VW Golf or similar – please give me the same car – knowing my luck I will have a wreck this time. There again, for the peace of mind it gives me, it is well worth the cost. Ironically, I have just rung the branch to see if I could collect the car earlier, and was told I couldn’t, they have also confirmed that the car, on this occasion, will be the VW Golf, or SEAT Leon, whichever becomes available first.

To be fair, the cars are spotlessly clean inside and out, and you will be expected to conduct an inspection and sign for recognisable damage on the exterior, it is worth being careful on this, as the process will be repeated by the Europcar staff upon the vehicles return. (In fairness, I can't say that I have hired a car from anyone where this has not been the case), although Europcar do tend to sway towards very new, low mileage vehicles, my SEAT Leon has only 3,000 miles on the clock.

SCORE – 10/10:
The last car I had was beautiful, and had the gentlemen responsible for despatching it, drooling at the mouth as I was leaving their depot, having driven around in it for 3 days, I can truly understand why.

PRICE
Price wise, Europcar, despite the addition of excess waiver and various other optional extras, are quite competitive. In the interests of my fellow ciao’ers, I got quotes from Avis, at £63 for the same vehicle for the same period, however, there was a compulsory £6.50 per day CDW which carried a £600 excess, or this could be reduced to £100 for an extra £10.95 per day. I also got a quote from National, who for a similar model of car were offering £130 for the 3 days, Hertz were offering £89 plus £10.95 per day super collision waiver damage.

In this instance, Europcar were definitely the cheapest, however, I guess the motto of the story is that if price is an issue, make sure that you have the full picture of just what those hidden extras are costing and what benefits do they provide.

RECOVERY
Thankfully, this is not something I have had to attempt, and with relatively new cars, something I won’t be faced with, but they do provide a 24 breakdown service.

IS THAT THE END OF THE STORY?
In addition to having used Europcar 3 times in the UK, I have also had the pleasure, (or not as the case may be) to hire cars at three of their overseas outlets, namely:

• Salou
Ibiza
Fuerteventura

All booked through the Thomson’s holiday rep, Europcar or Betacar as they are known in Spain, are evidently the ones who provide Thomsons with the most commission, are clients seem to no longer be offered a choice. In all three locations, representatives from the branch arrived promptly to collect us from our hotel, required a passport, driving licence and credit card to process our request, although in typical Spanish style there was never any great panic in being efficient.

In Salou, we were provided with a brand new VW Golf, in Ibiza, a brand new Opel Corsa, both companies provided excellent customer service, and very nice cars.

In Fuerteventura however, it was a different story. The car was selected by Tasha for a little extra for containing a radio, I know that most of it is in Spanish, but at least it is something to listen to. The ‘prize’ on this occasion was a Fiat Punto that had definitely seen better days, the radio didn’t work, the car had bumps and scratches all over it, and there was over 60,000KM on the clock. I was also transported to the airport by a ‘kamikaze’ driver who approached every roundabout at over 100KM an hour – terrifying to say the least. The service at the desk was appalling, and when I went back demanding a different vehicle, they weren’t overjoyed, but thankfully they did replace it with a new Fiat Punto in which everything worked.

When I am travelling alone with one of more kids, I always find it easier to return the vehicle to the airport, whilst, in Lanzarote and hiring from Hertz and collected from another depot, this was not a problem, yet in Fuerte, the vehicle came from the airport, but they came to collect it from the hotel, and were quite miffed when I said I would return it myself, I am not aware of whether they made any surcharge on my credit card as the statement hasn’t arrived yet.

SUMMARY
All in all, a reasonably efficient company, although in what is primarily a service based industry, the motto of the story is that it is people and how they care for their products that make the difference, and therefore my rating of the company is based upon my experiences at Swansea, Ibiza and Salou, as I suppose 3 out of 4 good ones is not bad for such a wide geographic spread – now I am off to pick up my Golf or SEAT, and then off to find the cheapest deal for collection from Valencia airport during July.

For the cheapest deals, try their website first, and avoid booking through Thomson reps in resorts overseas, definitely not the cheapest option.

OVERALL SCORE: 10/10
