Advantages: Unique day or half day trip Disadvantages: A fair distance out of town
Having lived in MexicoCity since the start of July, I can't believe it's taken me over 3 months to visit this place, since it's one of the most famous attractions in the city and has been since the 1920s. Xochimilco (soch-ee-milk-oh) is an area located to the south of the city, known for its series of canals, the remains of old Lake Xochimilco. Quick trivia here, this was home to canoeing and rowing competitions when Mexico hosted the Olympics back in 1968.
~ Getting There and When To Go ~
Xochimilco isn't just a bit south of the city, it's a long way away, so much so that it took me over an hour to get there and I already live south of the centre. Metros only run as far as Tasqueña (end of Line 2, the blue one) and from there you can either catch the Tren Ligero ("electric train" or as I would call it...a tram) or take ...
Advantages: Loads of free stuff to see and do Disadvantages: Can be busy at weekends
The Bosque de Chapultepec, also known as Chapultepec Park is a 1600 acre expanse of green space to one side of MexicoCity Centre, which has been a public park since the 16th Century, and remains one of the largest in the world. Within its gates there are many different things to see and do, and I have whiled away many a weekend here.
LOCATION
The park is located on the outskirts of the city, to the west of the main attractions such as the Zócalo. I have walked from there to here, and it took over an hour, so is not recommended (the route, along Reforma, is not too interesting). Being so large, it can be entered from various directions and is served by various Metro stations including Chapultepec, Auditorio and Constituyentes which are a much better option.
OPENING TIMES
While the various attractions within the park have ...
Advantages: More than just travel details Disadvantages: Oh God! He's a train spotter!
. When operating on 25,000 volts AC on purpose-built track, they cruise at 186 mph (the magic 300 kph mark), with about a 10% power reserve (as was shown recently when the new CTRL in Kent was being tested at 206 mph).
A normal length Eurostar has, as well as buffet cars, a further 16 passenger coaches, with some 794 seats, about 1/3rd of which are 1st class. Some shorter ?regional? Eurostars were also built. These were supposed to be serving centres like Glasgow and Edinburgh by now, but the company in its wisdom has decided to concentrate on the shorter journeys where they compete on a city centre-to-centre basis with the plane. They have however found a use, as anyone travelling on a London-Leeds train may have noticed lately. GNER have hired some spare Eurostar capacity to augment their existing train sets.
Other brave plans to ...
