When two thirds of Rome were burnt down by the big fire in 64 AD, emperor Nero (54-68 AD) used the free space for a new accommodation. The architects have done all possible things to satisfy his megalomania. The accommodation had to cover four districts. The palace itself radiated a tremendous luxury.
The most important part was a large rectangle at the Oppius hill where the four corner parts covered the four districts. The rooms, halls and corridors were abundantly decorated with gold, silver and precious stones. The eastern wing of the accommodation was used for public receptions. The western wing was the house of Nero. It was said that it had a round dining-room, which turned around day and night, inspired...

Advantages: Sites, food and culture Disadvantages: Noise, crime and its too busy
...When you go to a Europen capital you expect a certain of history. Paris may have 500 years of it, but Rome has over 2000 years of it making you see why it is called the eternal city.
Depending on how long you intend on going to Rome, you will need to decide beforehand on what sites to see. Firstly there are the ancient sites. These include the Collosium, Forum, Catacombs and DomusAurea (which may be closed due to structural repairs).
Secondly there are the renaissance sites such as the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and the Vatican.
Thirdly there are a tremedous amount of shops around Rome and a particularly good parade leads directly from the Spanish Steps.
The best way to visit Rome is to pair up different sites. Some may need a day to see e.g. Vatican. But some such as the Spanish Steps should be done in the morning...

Advantages: Good Location, Great Service, Clean, Friendly, Convienant! Disadvantages: Noisy road at night but where in Rome isn't!!!
...I have just returned from a 3 night stay in Rome at the Domus Inn, and am extremely happy. Domus Inn is a great little bed and breakfast in a very good location. It might not be right next to the Colosseum but with an array of buses that stop around the corner taking you to several key locations in the city, its all you need, The service is incredibly friendly and your breakfast is brought to you every morning. On arrival a map was drawn on for us to aid our trip and amazing (affordable) resturaunts recommended. The rooms are comfortable and clean, we had a standard double room with a shower, which was very spacious and the standard of the bathroom was very high. We paid 267 Euros for our 3 night stay which I thought was great value for money.
The hotels on a road so is noisy at night but you will unlikely find a hotel that isn...
