The area is disected by a main road which seems to run forever and is almost dead straight.A few feet either side of the road is thick swampland.
I visited the area in August 2000, where the heat had lowered the water level in many places. Even so there was an abundant range of animals, insects and birds to see.
The best way to see the wildlife is to go out on a Airboat. These airboats come in a range of sizes, from around 4 passengers to about 24.They effortlessly glide over water and reed beds alike and have a very impressive turning circle.
The one thing to remember about airboats is that they are very noisy. You may be better off buying earplugs(available for $1) as otherwise it is likely that your brain will end up feeling like it is rattling around inside your head.
Whilst out on the airboat I managed to see many Alligators, turtles, numerous colourful species of birds, insects and butterflies.I definately recommend a ride on the airboat as it is different to anything else I have experienced.
Another way of getting around the swamp is to ride in a swamp buggy. This is like a people carrier on giant wheels. You are so high up that you actually drive through many of the tree branches.During this trip I saw two families of racoons that took great delight in eating any food given to them.We also saw a couple of snakes, very large spiders, insects and birds. The swamp buggy is covered in a very fine mesh which stops any unwanted visitors joining you on the tour.
The combined cost for the Airboat ride/swamp buggy was around £30 for a family of 4.That included a discount from one of the numerous coupons freely available in the tourist brochures that you will encounter in Florida.
As for which operator to choose;I would estimate that there are somewhere between 15-20 different operators altogether. As you drive down the main road you will find them by the side of the road, one after another. My research found that they all charged very much the same sort of price.Obviously the skill and enthusiasm of the driver will make or break the trip.
As for other things to do in the everglades you are not exactly spoilt for choice. The area is very sparsely populated which on the one hand means there are very few amenities around but on the other hand leaves you free to enjoy the peace and quiet.

Do not forget your mosquito repellant as they are around in very large numbers. They seemed especially fond of my European blood! Seriously though, they are a nuisance and you do need to take precautions.
So there we have a brief description of the Everglades. They are certainly worth a visit and I would advise you to do it under your own steam rather than go on an organised tour. With only one road in and out you cant exactly get lost.
Advantages: an absolutley superb day out, fun, fun and fun Disadvantages: not cheap, and very long day out..
...FULL DAY excursion to the Everglades National Park which includes a ride on an airboat, a show featuring Aligators and an afternoon and early evening at Marco Island on the Gulf of Mexico before the long drive back to Orlando via St Petersburg..

Advantages: Feeling the air in your hair and the spray on your face! Disadvantages: Other than the unlikey event of getting eaten...NONE!
Most of the attractions here offer the same services; airboat rides! We opted for the Coopertown ride along the Tamiami trail as it had been recommended to us. The boats were clean and safe and had a knowledgeable guide who like to stop and feed his feathered friends (not to mention the toothy alligator types) marshmallows from his mouth! The guides have a good sense of humour and will usually tease the unsuspecting passengers for various reasons. ... ...everybody left with a smile on their face!
On our way back up from the keys, we couldn't resist another boat ride so went to an alligator farm just south of the South Florida Penetentary (which, in itself is worth a look out of the window as you drive past!). Sorry we can't remember the name of this farm, but there was only one at this location. They had excellent guides for the airboats and also for snake and alligator talks. Unlike Gatorland, ...

You like excitement? Come here! Airboat rides are all over the place, and basically consist of sitting on a flat piece of aluminium with a huge fan in the back and whipping through the sawgrass. Gators are all around you and occasionally underneath you. There are so many different varieties of birds and fish you won't believe it, and ther are actually some genuine Native Americans still living on a real reservation in the park. Of course, many of ...

Have you ever wanted to visit Florida's everglades? If this is the trip for you. On one of my many visits to Florida, I took the boggy creek air boat trip. This has got to be one of the best moments of my life, although I hate the thought of alligators, they frighten the life out of me. I gritted my teeth and went for it, am I am very pleased that I did.
THE TRIP
The Boggy Creek Airboat Ride experience is an airboat ride through Florida's everglades, boating slowly through the wetlands of the everglade swamps and taking in the surrounding scenery, and the amazing wildlife the everglades had to offer. The wildlife included alligators, bald eagles, exotic birds and turtles in their own natural habitat.
If that wasn't enough the boat driver then opened up to boat, so you seemed to be zipping over the water at extreme speed ...
Advantages: Great fun and lots to see Disadvantages: Only lasts half an hour!
I have always had a yearning to visit the Florida Everglades and travel on an airboat. However as my family and I are Theme Park addicts we never seemed to have been able to afford the time for the long journey to the Everglades. However before our last trip I read a guidebook which said that Boggy Creek Airboats were as good an experience as the Everglades. I don't know if this is true but I can give you a review of our trip.
Why The Boggy Creek Company?
There are quite a lot of Airboat companies operating around the Orlando area. I did some research before we travelled and I found the best recommendations, especially for safety, were for the Boggy Creek Company so that was where we headed. They also offer a variety of different trip options.
