Accommodation
Lyon like any other major city offers a wide range of hotels at different prices. I personally stayed at the very reasonable and very nice Campanile Part-Dieu. This hotel was ideal. The rooms came with en suite bathroom and cable TV. The rooms were clean and the hotel itself modern and very well looked after. The best thing of all about the hotel though was its situation. Part-Dieu is one of the main areas in Lyon. Firstly, it is home to a large SNCF railway station that links Lyon with the rest of France. Secondly, and most significantly for anyone on holiday, the 'Centre Commercial' is here. This is a massive shopping centre with over 260 shops and spanning 4 floors; one of the largest shopping centres in Europe with all big name shops and some really nice places to eat.

On the eastern side of the Rhône you will find the more recent neighborhoods of Lyon and also the great Parc de la Tête d'Or with it's zoo and rose garden. The Part-Dieu neighborhood houses one of Europe's largest shopping malls.
There are many museums: the fine arts museum, the contemporary arts museum, the Résistance and Deportation museum (WW2) to name a few.
Food
Lyon is a great place for eating. There are many specialties such as the Andouillette (porc intestins, it's better than it sounds), the quenelles, cochonailles (porc), cervelle de Canuts (sour cheese cream), bugnes (pastry) etc. etc. etc. The city is still perpetuating the tradition of the cullinary arts. You can't miss the bouchons lyonnais: the traditional restaurants.

Advantages: getting aroung the city Disadvantages: too much to see in a weekend
...I can't believe Lyon is not promoted more in the UK! We had the task of picking up a relative from the train station (Lyon Perrache) and so we decided to make a weekend of it. And what a weekend!
The shopping, for a start is formidable, from the huge mall at LyonPartDieu to the small shops and department stores in the city. However, the buildings, architecture and sights of the city are quite something else.
The massive squares in the city have to be the best in Europe. My favourite is in front of the Hotel de Ville. The building is magnificent and the square has decorative fountains and a huge fountain with four horses depicting the four great rivers of France. Adjacent to the hotel de ville is the Museum des Beaux arts with some very impressive pieces. This is just a short walk from the Opera House and also the old part of Lyon...

The Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack seem to be on a universe wide quest for chips. The planet they're on this time has chips which are soft, slightly peppery, oily and, more importantly, blue. Still, the chips add a bit of colour in a world which is... more
