    And so it came to pass that I found myself in need of a room to stay in the environs of Alton Towers so that I could go to the Ciao meet. The suggestion had been made that we all try to book ourselves in to the Holiday Inn, Stoke on Trent since there were various deals available and, more importantly, rooms! My perception of the Holiday Inn chain was fairly good. Utilitarian 24/7 hotels sprung to mind.     After the last Ciao meet and the wonderful (not) hotel that we all remember so fondly I was relieved to find the words 'Holiday' and 'Inn' on the community page as the suggested hotel for the Alton Towers meet. I have stayed in more Holiday Inn Hotels than I have possibly had hot dinners over the years, in general I find them all to be of a decent standard, clean, functional and most times with friendly and courteous staff.     Advantages Advantages The Holiday Inn, Middlesbrough is pet friendly and has friendly staff generally and the breakfast is good

    Disadvantages Disadvantages standards are deceptive with several different tariffs that are not made explicit while rooms are down graded to match the price paid

    Do not be deceived into thinking that a good price at a branded hotel chain means the expected standard. In their advertising for The Holiday Inn, Middlesbrough they actually use an executive room for their publicity with no reference to the fact that their standard rooms are less than the standard expected and advertised by the chain as a whole. Hence the old adage, ‘you get what you pay for’ and in this instance this is absolutely true. On their internet booking site there are apparently extremely good prices for a branded hotel.     I have been to the Express Inn, Stoke-on-Trent a number of times now. I went a first time with a large group of friends and we continue to go back. Cost The prices range significantly between £30 - £70 and as far as I can tell you get pretty much the same for whatever you pay. Keep an eye on their online booking site and you should be able to get a deal. We stayed in a family room for £39. This sleeps 2 Adults and 2 Children but you can pay an extra £5 per adult (instead of the children).
