The Express by Holiday Inn hotel in Glenrothes is one I have stayed in a couple of times, when visiting the Fife area of Scotland. Located on the outskirts of Glenrothes, the hotel is situated in a quiet location, set back from the road, with ample car parking. The hotel has two floors with 49 rooms. All the rooms are non -smoking.
On entering the hotel, the reception area is small but adequate, as this is one of the smaller hotels in the chain, but it does feel quite cosy and friendly. The reception staff are always friendly and helpful and I have never had any problems checking in. There is a dining area just behind reception and this is where you go for breakfast, which is included in the price.
Entry to the room is by swipe card. The rooms are all clean with modern decor, and the bed very comfortable with plenty of pillows. If you want more, then just ask at Reception and they are happy to oblige. The rooms are also quite spacious, with en suite bathroom with
power shower. Lux shower gel, and Dove handwash is provided. If you do happen to forget any essential toiletries or sanitary items, then these are available from Reception free of charge. Towels are also provided.
A kettle is provided, with mugs and sachets of coffee, sugar, tea bags and milk. We stayed for a couple of nights on our last stay and these were replenished the next day. Also in the room is a TV with a couple of Sky channels included, a hairdryer, telephone and modem point. The rooms we have stayed in have always been very clean and comforatble.
I mentioned before that breakfast is included in the price. This is a continental breakfast which you help yourself to. If you don't wish to eat in the dining area you can take a tray back to your room. There is always plenty to choose from, including a range of cereals, toast, jams, pastries, croissants, fruit and yoghurt, as well as tea, coffee and fruit juice.
Next door to the hotel is a lovely pub 'The Fettykil Fox' which serves really good meals from 12pm-10pm every day at reasonable prices. It is one of the reasons we like the hotel so much! The menu offers an extensive choice of starters, main courses and desserts, as well as other 'specials' which are written on a blackboard. I really cannot rate the food highly enough. It is always well- cooked and well-presented. The portions are large and the service very good. I couldn't ask for more! Main courses are priced between £5 - £10. Some of the meals I have enjoyed here are Chicken open pie with seasoned chips or Cheddar mash, Aberdeen Angus burger and Gammon Steak. The pub is very cosy with log fires and candles on the tables. There is also a beer garden, which is lovely in the summer months. The staff are always very welcoming and it is one of the best pubs I have ever visited in terms of the food, decor and atmosphere.
Check-in at the hotel is 3pm and check-out 12pm, but if you are a member of the Priority Club Rewards scheme which anyone can join free of charge, then you can ask for earlier check in and later check-out at no extra charge. It is worth joining this if you frequently stay at any hotels in the group (Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza to name a couple, are included) as it is free to join, and you collect points for every stay which can be redeemed for free nights. This is a really good reward scheme which brings many benefits, apart from extended check in and out times, you will also receive priority check in, complimentary newspapers and regular offers sent to you via email, to earn extra points. I have earned quite a few free nights over the last five years, and the good thing is your points never expire so you can save them for as long as you wish. There is also no black-out dates on redeeming your points, so you can have a free night on any day you wish.
The hotel is 20 miles from the Forth Bridge, so not far from Edinburgh, and also not far from Loch Leven. The villages of Elie and Crail are also nearby. If you like golf then St Andrews, Carnoustie and Gleneagles are not far away. Quite a few golfers have been staying at the hotel on our visits. There is also a riverside park approx half a mile away from the hotel.
We found the hotel quite easy to find from the M9, you take the A92 to Glenrothes. At Bankhead roundabout, follow sign for St Andrews. At the next roundabout take A911 to Leslie. After 4 roundabouts, you will see the hotel on the left, set back from Leslie Road.
Rooms are available from around £49- £59 if you book online at HiExpress.co.uk. I have stayed here for just £39 though as there are often offers available online. I think they are very good value for money compared to Premier Inn etc as continental breakfast is included, and of course you are earning reward points too!
I have never experienced any problems staying at this hotel. It is quiet and cosy, and you are always assured of a warm wlecome at both the hotel and the pub next door. If ever you are looking for a hotel in this area then I would definitely recommend this one!
