I went to the Faeroe Islands on my way to Iceland. In fact I HAD to go there, since the boat to Iceland dropped us off at the Faeroe Islands while going to Norway to pick up more passengers for Iceland. Therefore I had to spend two days on this group of islands.

We arrived in Torshavn, which is the "capital" (the Faeroe Islands are not independent, even though they wish to be), and the small houses slowly emerged from the fog. It is a small town, with about 15000 inhabitants. On all of the islands there are about 45000 people, and twice as many sheep!
When we took off from Torshavn we drove through the fog, unable to see anything of the surroundings. However, when we started to go downhill, the fog cleared and revealed the most beautiful valley in between mountains covered with green grass. There was a small stream beside the road, and we stopped to wash ourselves and to taste the ice-cold pure water.
Since I only stayed for two days on the two largest islands (connected with a bridge), I suppose that I cannot give a totally fair judgement. The few people we met seemed really friendly though, and the atmosphere was astounding. I even took a dip in the ocean in a small fishing village, and despite it being July the cold water almost made me lose my breath.
There are no trees on the islands, and therefore almost all of the houses are made of corrugated iron. The roads are however in perfect condition, even though they are really winding up the hills in some places. The language has resemblance to ancient Nordic languages, and can to some extent be understood by Scandinavians.
If I ever get the chance to go back there, I wouldn't think twice.
