Fairmount park is situated a little off the beaten track in Philadelphia, away from centre city and the more popular Old arts and historical district. (however the Philadelphia museum of Art is just on the edge of the park.

Ok this park is absolutely huge, I was told it is something like 4000 acres and I believe that to be true.
The Schuylkill river runs through the park and there are thousands and thousands of trees and masses of beautiful open space that makes it too easy to forget that you are on the edge of a large city.

It is a perfect location for riverside walks, picnics with the family or some really hard-core hiking. There are miles of cycle paths and bridle tracks where I saw many people riding their horses.

As well as childrens parks and play areas dotted all over the park it is also the home of the Philadelphia zoo

There are also lots buildings of historical interest and monuments left over from when the park was the venue for the USA centennial exhibition in 1876. The zoo is the oldest in the country, (although I did not actually go and visit...I don't like zoos)

Dotted around the park are some monuments and statues like a huge (bronze, If I remember right) of joan of Arc on horseback and the beautiful sea-horse fountain and so many gardens and cherry blossom lined avenues; the aromas make you giddy.

As parks go this one is really second to none; with enough to do to tire out the most hyperactive child and put the most agitated adult in a state of peace and harmony.
It is just too large to see all of it, but whenever I visit Philadelphia I go and see a little bit more.

Most definatley a place to visit for all the family
