For those of you who read my last travel report on Cyprus, you will know that this was my best ever holiday, mainly because it was where I got married. But my last holiday to Rhodes came a close second and takes some beating.
After much umming and ahhing about where we were going to go for our summer holiday 2 years ago we decided to go to Greece for the first time. Cyprus had got really expensive since our last visit, and I was bored of Spain, so Greece it was.
After troughing through brochure after brochure we found the Hotel Espirides in Portland Direct's summer brochure. It looked ideal. It was located just on the outskirts of Faliraki in an area called Kalithea. We thought this would be perfect as it would be away from the noisy nightlife, this being important as our daughter was 4 at the time, and we are past night-clubbing.
Still, don't let the fact that Faliraki is not a place to go if you don't like rowdy pubs and clubs. We travelled there in late September and it was a lot quieter than the height of summer. There was plenty to do in the town, lots of cafes and restaurants to choose from and although a little more expensive than other resorts, still reasonably priced. Because we were staying in our hotel on a half board basis, we didn't tend to eat out much, but we did go out for a meal once or twice for a change and found that a 2 course meal for 3 people with drinks worked out at just under £20, so quite reasonable.
Back to the hotel, I can't comment enough on how excellent our accommodation was. The hotel was well run and it catered for all. Children were mesmerised by the carousel and dodgems, and there were water slides also. There was a kids club which was excellent if you wanted a break from the kids for an hour or so, and loads of entertainment for the mums and dads. We went on holiday for a rest, but we always ended up being dragged into taking part in Volleyball, aerobics or wat er-polo. But it was all good fun.
There is a poolside taverna serving light snacks and drinks during the day, and there are various other eateries located in and around the hotel, offering an array of food and drink. If you are half-board, you have the choice of either having lunch or your evening meal at the hotel, so you are not tied in any way. The evening meals are A-la Carte and were all well presented and tasty. Children are well catered for, pizzas and fish fingers are on offer to keep the little ones happy.
During the day there are lots of things to do outwith the hotels. We were located just across the road from the waterpark and we spent a day there. It was brilliant as it was the end of the summer and there were no queues for any of the rides.
We also walked most days to Faliraki as the beach there was one of the best on the island. There were many beach activities on offer including paragliding, jet-skis, banana boats and cruises. We went on an island cruise and it took us to Rhodes Town where we were dropped off for a couple of hours and allowed to explore the old town. We liked it there so travelled by bus to Rhodes town a couple of days later as there was so much to see and do. Transport in Rhodes is very cheap, although buses are usually infrequent and crowded.
Most of our evenings were spent at the hotel, where the entertainment was second to none. We were given peace for half an hour while our daughter went to the mini disco before the evening entertainment began. The Michael Jackson experience was probably one of the best shows I have ever seen. But all the shows there were excellent, the entertainment team knew how to get the holiday makers in the mood and I was sad to go home.
During our stay in Faliraki we didn't encounter any trouble, but this was probably because we went in low season. This for us was a good choice as the weather was still excellent. We had really hot days and feel that June-July would be far too hot.
Advantages: A great experience with great sites and cheap Disadvantages: sometimes drunken groups
Sometimes I get wound up when I know people are dissing Faliraki. So here's a Non-Biased Opinion of mine.
Faliraki is like any other tourist destination: Its popular, Its got clubs, restaurants many hotels and lots of british people. Being Rape Captial made my heart sink. Because its not Falirakis fault? Young people are binge drinking in the famous Bar Street and then walking home alone. Wherever you are in the world look after youself. The same ... ...turkey!
Location:
Located Very close to Rhodes Town which has everything From Shops such a 3 Floored 'Zara' To many other local fashion shops. Faliraki itself is on the beach and is a very popular location, Bus services are great which means you can catch a bus to Rhodes town and it takes you 10 minutes. Rhodes is like any other mediterranean Island and has dusty roads in rural areas! I Had to laugh when i saw dusty roads as being a disadvantage ...

Advantages: Good holiday Disadvantages: Sally fracturing her foot!
I went to Faliraki in Rhodes with the girls about 7 years ago (gulp, is it really that long?!) and had a great time. There were 5 of us that went - 3 of us in one apartment and the other 2 (who had booked a few weeks after us) in different accommodation, not far away.
We had a great holiday, though it wasn't the most rowdy girls holiday I've been on! Faliraki wasn't as well-known then as it is now - I'm sure if I went back now, there'd be loads ... ...already, but there was room for more! We tended to stick to the same bars most nights - our favourite was George's Bar, where there was cheap drinks, "spin the wheel" (whatever it landed on was on special offer for 10 mins) and dancing on the bar - a real good laugh.
We actually ventured into Rhodes Town one day - but that was only because one of the girls had fallen off a kerb while drunk and we had to take her to the hospital in Rhodes Town - ...

Advantages: Beautiful weather, Cheap bus service, Planned trips Disadvantages: Potentially dangerous, Not entirely child-friendly atmosphere
...the media give you of Faliraki, one small town on the island of Rhodes packed full of bars, clubs and restaurants, are of huge groups of British tourists- all members of the 18/30 club or on some package holiday- having drink poured directly down their throats, staggering along the streets and disappearing into dark alleys together. So this is, partially, what I was expecting when we got out to Billy's Apartments in Faliraki.
We got in at four in ... ...when someone recognises you in Faliraki, they look out for you. And if you're with friends who will look after you too, you've got it made. My eight friends and I spent a week in Faliraki without anything untoward or non-consensual happening, and without staying in every night. Lots of shots were consumed. One night we spent sixty euros on drink for the apartment, and another we stayed out until half seven in the morning and watched the sunrise from ...

...deal that took us to Faliraki, Rhodes. Loads of our friends had been there during the very busy summer months and described it as the most amazing place that they had never wanted to leave. We ahd to go.
After a comfortable journey that did not take too long, we arrived at our hotel 'The Venezia' at about five in the morning, delighted to find a twenty four hour bar!
In the morning, we had a meeting with the reps who told us of all the excursions ... ...this was a place that served as a perfect base if you wanted to visit various sights, Islands etc.Unfortunately, myself and my friend were strapped for cash, and we only got to go on one which was a trip to a village absolutely in the middle of nowhere, for easter day, where there was greek dancing, and a big meal with free wine put on for us. It was a truly fantastic day. We had hoped to visit lindos also, which was apparently fantastic, the transport ...

Advantages: fun for family Disadvantages: no food choice for kids
Went to sun palace in falirakirhodes on may 3rd 2006 my first impressions were really great could not fault any thing about this place.
The room we was given was a family room as we had 2 children with us one who was 1 and one who was 4, it came well equipped with fridge tv and cot for the little one, you had a huge wardrobe with hangers and plenty of storage space, the bathroom was really nice and clean with bath and shower which was great as my children dont like showers.
The bed was big enough for at least 3 adults and you also had a seperate bedroom with two single beds in which led out on to balcony, again which was very clean.
All in all the room was lovely and clean and spacious.
As we were on all inclusive food was available all day either from snack bar or main restaurant only problem with the food was finding stuff which ...

INTRODUCTION
Faliraki is a resort on the Greek Island of Rhodes. Commonly referred to as "full-of-crap-y", it has had a lot of bad press recently; first, a fly-on-the-wall TV programme was filmed there, featuring British youngsters and their drunken, loutish behaviour, and more recently, there have been reports about the seedier side of the resort: drugs, robbery, rape.
Unfortunately, none of this had reached the ears of my husband or me, by the time that we booked a last-minute break to the resort! Hmmm, we wondered why it was so impossibly cheap?
LOCATION
The flight to Rhodes took around four and a half hours, being one of the furthest Greek islands from Britain. The transfer to our accommodation by coach was relatively pain-free, only taking just over an hour, which was less than the 90 minutes advertised in the brochure ...
