I went to North Cyprus in January after a 15 year break, although Kyrenia is a little more built up the rest of the north is little changed. It costs around £200 for a return ticket which includes a 45 minute stop over in Turkey as there are no direct flights due to the non recognition of the the Norths government. I stayed at long beach near Salamis, you need to spend at least half a day in the ruins and remember to take water with you as there is only a cafe outside of the ruins. The ruins are amazing and you can wander among the builds and actually touch things. Famagusta was a short drive away and is good for shopping and such things as Turkish Delight. One of the things I always look for in Turkish areas is a water pipe cafe so that i can enjoy the the fruit tobacco smokes which take about an hour. Usually you take apple tea of coffee with it and maybe play a game of backgammon. In Famagusta I found Nargile'ci which is on the right after the university coming in from Salamis. Really nice place with great people, mostly young students. Across the road is a side road which if you go 200m and turn left you come to Ali Babas restaurant, he speaks little English but manages to provide all that you need at around £5.00 a head including drinks. In Bogaz the other direction from Salamis you can find the speedboat or Dudleys bar, this is run by one of the guitarists from Nashville Teens a sixties group, good food and conversation there. Brandy sours are what you must try, they are a drink which if you like it you tend to stay with it for the whole holiday. Eating in local cafes and bars is no problem Lamajun is popular and filling, it's like a small thin base pizza. The people are amazing in that they will go out of their way to make sure that you enjoy yourself, one of the managers at the long beach took me to the water pipe cafe for my first visit and would not let me pay. If you like donkeys then head up the panhandle and you will find wild donkeys roaming the hills. As long as you avoid the main summer months it will not be too hot. I guess I shall be back there as soon as my schedule allows it.

I'd love to see Northern Cyprus, Kyrenia is supposed to be stunning. But I'm afraid I won't be doing that until its ours again - I'm half Cypriot you see. I'm glad you enjoyed it though. Jami xx
