The travel reps tried desperately to sell everyone on our airtours package holiday one of their tours to visit famagusta which translates roughly to mean "ghost town". As we hired a car anyway with the island being so small we decided to do the trip on our own. How relieved we were that we hadn't forked out our spending money on this trip! As emotional and full of history as this place actually is due to the fact that the part of the island is still under Turkish occupation you can not actually get into the town itself. Views are only obtained from telescopes or binoculars on the roofs of cafes and bars, well away from the actual area. The best views actually come from old photographs and artists impressions. It is worth a look at the historical data on the town but there is nothing physically to see despite what the reps may tell you! Be warned also it's not a trip for the children.

Anna Viewpoint is an ideal place to see across the Green line into Turkish occupied Cyprus
