We list this place not because its menu or cooking are exceptional, but because it overlooks the sea and is well removed from the bustle of Rethymnon's center. It offers prompt and pleasant service as well. The old harbor and the old beach strip are now so geared to tourism that an unpretentious taverna like this comes as a relief and a retreat. Take a table at the railing, order a cool drink, and enjoy your meal. You can't go wrong with the standard fare, and fish here can be as tasty as at most of the more expensive locales.
Advantages: Pretty forest areas, cheap bike hire, great food. Disadvantages: Lots more fast roads than other Greek islands,
...On my second holiday to Greece I decided to go to Crete. The brochure pictures made the country look beautiful. It is a pretty country but unlike other Greek islands it is
large and presumably for many years has had thriving industries. This makes Crete
more commerical. It doesn't feel like a little Greek island.
This isn't to say it is a bad holiday spot. You just have to be prepared for the difference. There are plenty of things to do on Crete for the tourists. Not only the orgainised towns that have built up around tourism like Stalis or Malia. These places are ugly and solely for 18-30 holidays.
Getting out of the tourist traps and exploring Crete is far more exciting. It has a fantastic road system that is 90% tarmac, which you can get to nearly anywhere on the island. Trips to the Waterparks and places of interest...

There are many people who are in love with Crete. But why? Is it the sunshine, the sea, the peace of life? If you think about it you can find a million of places, which fit to this type. No, there must be something else with that island, what makes people come back again and again. It must be the "Crete" addiction. I have to admit - I am addicted!
My addiction started when I was only 13! My mum and I had since then every year at least 4-6 weeks holidays in Crete! We started to make friends; we stayed every time with the same family.
When I finished my studies in Germany (yes I am German - so should you find any spelling mistakes please let me...

Advantages: Diversity, Culture, History, Excitment Disadvantages: Very easy to see nothing and just relax on a beach
...After returning recently from 2 weeks exploring the island for the first time, I am itching to return. Unlike most islands Crete has everything from Modern watersports to ancient ruins and breathtaking terrain.
In the two weeks we visited Satorini, a volcanic island where a civilisation was wiped out 4000 BC. Of the 1% uncovered so far after digging through 30 feet of volcanic rock they discovered a civilisation which had running water, 2 storey buildings and flushing toilets 6000 years ago.
Elswere back on Crete there are other marvels such as Knossos, which was a huge 150 room palace that was the centere of the minoan civilisation.
Food and wine is excellent and driving around the island easy. Unless you cross the moutains when the roads become very exciting.
Other sites to see are the Somarian Gorge (the largest in Europe) witha...
