the wonderful views it affords over the Old Town, and on a clear day, the snow-capped mountains of the Julian Alps.
Back in the lower part of the Old Town there are plenty more interesting sights. There is a striking, if not hugely attractive, cathedral; personally I found the Gothic interior more pleasing than the sober exterior. The Landhaus is the home of the regional parliament of Styria and is a wonderful building reminiscent of a Venetian palazzo. The arcaded courtyard is amazing and really takes you away to Italy!
Sporgasse and Sackstrasse are not only home to some wonderful boutiques, art galleries, chocolatiers and antique shops but the buildings that house them are the most eclectic architectural mix. In between them narrow alleyways lead to little bars and restaurants or yet more tiny shops tucked away.

Advantages: excellent snowboarding or skiing region Disadvantages: VERY COLD
Situated in the North of Germany is a mountainous range called Herz and it's easily accesible by train or car, but I recommend a 4x4. We travelled there in a 4x4 and found the roads to be extremely steep at points and covered in ice on the mountain roads. The nearest airports are Paderborn and Hannover that I know of. But by car it's the number 7 autobahn (motorway) that we used and then travelled through Herzberg to get to a medium sized town called Braunlage, which is well equiped for all your needs.
We had decided the previous morning to travel there but I wished that we had booked somewhere in advance to stay in because as it was peak season nearly everything was booked but we managed to find a quant little hotel called Landhaus Zum Schultheiss to stay in. It was a B&B but at 31?uro's each per night to stay in a two bedroom ...
Advantages: attractive scenery, nice people, lots to see Disadvantages: no direct flights from the UK

Luegg house, for example, is known for its stucco facade dating back to the 17th century, whereas the Landhaus (seat of the local parliament) is a remarkable renaissance building.
The Zeughaus (also in Herrengasse) is a muesum of arms, one of the largest such colleciton in the world, with a lot of armoury in excellent order, previously used by the knights and soldiers in the 1700s and 1800s. More than 29,000 weapons of all kinds are on display here (cold steel, arms on poles and fire-arms, arquebuses, pistols, muskets, etc.).

A visit to Graz is not complete without having been to the Schlossberg, the green hill overlooking Graz from about 120 meters.
For your way up the hill I recommend to use the old Schlossbergbahn (a funicular). You might have difficulty to find ...
