An Old Friend

Advantages: Free Admission, Good collection
Disadvantages: none

Ferens art Gallery is the main art gallery in Hull, (Kingston-upon-Hull), it has the most resources, the biggest collection, and the best funding. You will see as part of the permanent collection, works by such luminaries as Frans Hals, Antonio Canaletto, Frederick Leighton, Percy Whyndam Lewis, Stanley Spencer ( I like), Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, David Hockney, Peter Blake, Bridget Riley, Helen Chadwick, and others, not bad for a provincial ...
...own judgements. I think the Ferens has done well to break down this stuffy atmosphere over recent years, and has tried to bring in and involve the local community, with projects, and club type activities. There is a children’s gallery for example. The children’s gallery was launched at the Ferens in 2000 by Michael Underwood, BBC children’s tv presenter ( I’ve never heard of him) and was created with a grant from the Heritage lottery fund. Its aimed ... more

Come and be a culture vulture .

Advantages: Free admission , exceptional exhibits , award winning , good cafe
Disadvantages: Under promoted

...I can remember Ferens Art Gallery as a schoolchild in the late 1950's and have visited it from time to time since It, and its surroundings, have undergone a few changes, in this time, but the frontage remains the same. It is situated next to the Monument Buildings, Victoria Square, Kingston-Upon-Hull . Hull is on the north bank of the River Humber, in the East Riding of the county of Yorkshire. At one time Victoria Square was a very busy square ...
...local art gallery pre the Ferens being built), shops, a lovely old bank now a cafe, The Town Docks Museum(another fine old building, once the Dock offices but now a renowned Maritime museum), the Princes Quay shopping development(built over the old Princes Dock, the water still being there )and back to Monument Buildings, which are adjacent to the gallery. The pathways are in the usual brick which developers always seem to use everywhere these days. ...

Art!?! - Me. NEVER!!

Advantages: free, quite interesting
Disadvantages: not well known

...all ages. The impressive Ferens Art Gallery was opened in 1927 and extended in 1991,.It won the Museum of the Year Award in 1993 for the Best Museum of Fine and Applied Art. The gallery is smack bang in the center of Hull so can easily be found if you have been shopping. At either side of the gallery are entrances to the marine side Princes Quay so you should be able to find it easily. It claims to have one of the largest collections of regional ...
...ingenious! A visit to the Ferens wouldn’t be complete without taking the time out to view these superb oil paintings. Below I have listed a couple of exhibitions which are current or upcoming. W. Barns-Graham has an exhibition until the 27th June 2004. W. Barns-Graham has been a key figure since the 40’s, associated with the group of artists of St Ives. She continues to produce landcape paintings and prints as well of scenes of the natural world. ...

There's no place like Hull

Advantages: Cheap, friendly, near the sea, near the countryside
Disadvantages: Could do with a few more major highstreet shops

As a resident of Hull myself i have found that the residents either love it or hate it. And having lived in Stoke-on-Trent for over 4 years, I can proudly say that I love my home town, or should I say City. Whenever Hull is mentioned on the TV, and usually it is in the comic context (see The Office, Spaced and Blackadder Goes Fourth, to name but a few), it is often described as Hell and smells of fish etc. So what if by changing a letter in its name, Hull becomes Hell, why don't we apply the same to Notting Hill for instance? No, Hull is a little known City, and City it is, which many people wouldn't know. We have the Humber Bridge and Country Park for afternoon strolls/rides during the summer. We have the Marina for summer drinking and folk and jazz festivals, and likewise Queen's gardens. We have The Deep, Ferens Art Gallery ...

Hull's a Hidden Gem

Advantages: Vibrant Nightlife, Cultural gems, friendly people
Disadvantages: Poor Educational record

Hull does not have a good reputation. Most people's view on the East Yorkshire city is based on ignorance. First some facts....this City doesn't have a fishing industry, it is easy to get to from other parts of the country, it does have some excellent shops and a vibrant nightlife. Few people are aware that William Wilberforce, who played a vital part in the abolition of slavery came from Hull. The City has a Wilberforce Museum which outlines the battle to end the Slave Trade and there is a statue of the man in the City centre. Many visitors to Hull are also delighted with the Ferens Art Gallery which has had some intriguing modern art exhibitions and the Spring Street Theatre which is home to the nationally reknowned Hull Truck Theatre Company. The company is best known for the works of playwright John Godber who's written such popular ...

Hull is where the heart is

Advantages: Its cheap, the people are nice, there is loads to do and see.
Disadvantages: Uni students who come here give it a bad name then go home!

, a tranquil park, with lakes, fountains and flowers. What really fascinates me about this little haven is that this used to be another Hull Dock, it was filled in and turned into a garden. In fact this was the very dock that Daniel Defoes hero Robinson Crusoe set sail from in the book! Overlooking the park is some of the university campuses and the main building Hull College of FE, here is where you will find all the lawyers lurking as the Law courts and Guildhall are here too! Now for a cultural Tour of the area. Ferens Art Gallery is Hull’s largest Gallery and the only one I have visited for quite a while so the only one I am willing to judge. This Gallery is cool and airy with a variety of exhibitions; recently Alphonse Mucha work on the Art Nuveau period was housed here. There is a teashop and plenty of places to sit and rest ...
