Advantages: A great weekend, free events, attracts many big artists. Disadvantages: It may rain!
One of my best memories of summer 2001 was going to the Brecon JazzFestival whilst I was working at a summer camp nearby.
The Brecon Jazzfestival is renowned all over Europe and attracts big names such as Van Morrison and the Bootleg Beatles. There are loads of indoor concerts for which you need tickets, which can be expensive and sell out quickly. The town is transformed for the long weekend, all traffic is banned from the city centre and loads of marquees are put up.
As well as the paying events, there is loads going on for the rest of us who want to join in the fun (but are either skint or not willing to pay to listen to jazz).
In George Square there is a stage where bands play for free. The night I went there was a brass band (similar to Blues Brothers music). They were brilliant and really interesting to watch with all ...
Advantages: Great music, in a relaxing atmosphere Disadvantages: try and prebook
If Jazz is your thing, then like me a Jazzfestival is a must see event. In Edinburgh you can combine the pleasure of Jazz, a beautiful city, and of course Scottish hospitality. The Edinburgh Festival consists of 70 events and covers a period of 10 days, this year the event runs from July 28th to August the 6th. All music tastes are catered for from New Orleans to the avant garde. One of our favourite events is a trip to the Spiegeltent. For only £5.00, a ticket can be bought for this attraction situated on Princes Street. We relaxed listening to the music and enjoyed a few light and not so light refreshments, and if your lucky you may even mix with the stars of the festival, both relaxing and occasionally jamming. Open until 11.00pm, try and pre book tickets and you will be rewarded with a night to remember. ...
Advantages: great atmosphere. Disadvantages: So many festivals, so little time!
Almost every weekend between April and October there is a folk festival going on somewhere in the Uk. They aren't always that easy to find out about - most do have websites these days though. Here's some usuful information about folk festials.
Normally, folk festivals run from Friday night to Sunday night, weekend tickes include camping, there is almost always access to bed and breadkfast.(There are several week long festivals, Sidmouth and Whitby that I know of.) The campsites tend to be civillised. Most festivals have activities for children. While some festivals will include professional performers, sessions, sing arounds, celidhs, dance displays, mummers and crafts, many specialise - it's worth checking as theres not point going to shanty festival if all you actually want to do is dance! The average festival will cost about £35 ...
