Before I first flew Finnair I had heard mixed things about it, with the general consensus being that it was great in business class and not so great in economy.
Well, I can only vouch for economy but I have to say I thought the experience a good one. I flew from Singapore to Helsinki via Bangkok in May 2006 as part of a ticket taking me from Brisbane to London. I actually chose Finnair because I wanted a few days stopover in both Singapore and Helsinki and in the event it was the cheapest ticket available (AU$1300 including tax, which is about GBP520 for a one way ticket and also included the leg from Brisbane to Singapore, which was flown with Qantas).
Check in at Singapore was great, no queue at all, and even though my luggage was at least 10kg over the limit, the check in girl checked it through when I smiled nicely at her (NB- this may not work every time!). 'Plane took off on time and although I had the rearmost seat row I had two seats to myself, at least until Bangkok. Food was good although in economy there is no choice and in fact if you fly this route you get dinner between Singapore and Bangkok and then dinner again from Bangkok to Helsinki. Seats were a bit cramped but no worse than normal economy and drinks were freely available. A nice touch is that at Bangkok all the seat backs had a bottle of water stuffed into them by the cabin crew. The major problem with Finnair is that it's product and aircraft are a bit outdated. Finnair flies its long haul routes with MD-11s, which are slightly noisier than newer wide body aircraft. Also the seat backs have no TV in them, which is standard on most long haul airlines these days. However, as the flight was overnight I wanted to sleep anyway so I didn't mind too much about the little TVs. Those travelling with children might want to think about this though.
The flight was smooth and arrived on time and all throughout the cabin crew were friendly and efficient, serving breakfast before we landed. Unlike most other airlines, Finnair tends to emply a much older cabin crew (average age 40 instead of 25) but I feel this is better: older more experienced cabin crew gives better service in my opinion.
Anyway, overall a good airline to fly with and one I would use again. Flying with them also gives you the chance to see Helsinki, a truly beautiful city, and enjoy some Finnish hospitality.

I've heard of a few people using Finnair to get to the Far East. Singapore Changi airport definitely rates as my favourite airport.

An interesting review - I hadn't realized they did long haul flights, so that's useful to know. I flew with them a few years ago and remember the mature stewardesses in their furry boots (it was quite cold...) I also recall the vegetarian option was a bread roll with a lettuce leaf in it! :-)
