This is my opinion on the experience I had with my first holiday abroad.
** SEARCHING **
First Choice was easy to search online. There is a section for last minute deals that actually search 3 months ahead. Holiday Search options are Depart date, Fly From Airport, Length of Stay, Number of passengers, Holiday Location, start rating, board type, these options are used to search for exactly the type of holiday you want and are then listed with as close a match as possible to the date you want and are listed with lowest price per person first. Quoted prices exclude the Guaranteed online discount, Compulsory fuel supplement of £25 to £55, ticket on departure charge of £12 per person if travelling within 14 days.
** EXTRA HOLIDAY OPTIONS **
Pre-bookable seating ensures that you sit together with your friends and family during your flights. Whilst we cannot guarantee that your party won't be separated across the aisle, we will try to avoid this. Pre-book your seats on a First Choice Airways flight and check in 90 mins before your flight, instead of the normal 2 hours. This option costs £10 per adults £5 per child. This is not included in the price but if you arrive early at check-in you can be seated together anyway as it is a first come first served basis so unless you kids are extremely young it isn't that necessary. In-Flight Meals are included in the price £10 per adult and £5 per child but you can exclude them and reduce you price of the holiday you also have the option to make any special request for vegetarian, diabetic etc. Each person has an included 20kg Baggage Allowance. If you're holiday is leaving soon the tickets will be at the airport for collection. Late Checkout Room charge varies and is not included but can be added for a charge if flights times are odd. Return coach transfers are included from the airport to your accommodation door you can make your own arrangements but there is no discount if you don't take their coach. Hire a Car option is extra and you need to be 21 years old prices vary. The Travel Foundation is a UK charity that cares for the places you love to visit. It runs projects around the world to protect the natural environment and support local people in holiday destinations. A £1.20 contribution is added to your holiday price based on family of 4 but you can exclude this donation.
** HOLIDAY BOOKING **
After you have selected all your option you can now proceed to book. You have an agreement to click then straight onto a latest info page that will tell you any problems at your selected destination for you to review before booking if there is any and you must click to say you have read and understand it. The next page is passenger details. The lead passenger must be the main travelling adult and person that will be driving any hire vehicle. You have the option here to add first
choice own recommended travel insurance. You have the option to boo with our without insurance and the total price you pay is clearly marked on both options. If you book without insurance you will get a pop up screen informing you to make sure you take out insurance cover elsewhere this is standard. You are now onto the main booking page with your contact details and payment details. You have the option to review all your holiday details to check. A credit card charge applies for payments made using a MasterCard or Visa Credit Card of 2%. There is no charge associated with Visa Debit/Delta, Switch/Maestro or Solo debit cards. All your documents are sent to you within a few days of booking if there are any errors then you need to call customer service ASAP.
** HOLIDAY REPS AND FLIGHTS **
We were treated with great respect and had no problems at all booking in. We had booked seats but arrived very early anyway. The staff were polite and very helpful and called customers forward from the line leaving enough space for privacy. The flight was very comfortable and there was enough space that my 15-year-old son moved seats to a window seat and cabin crew were great about it. We had 4 small kids with us too and they gave all the kids a goodie bag. The meals were very basic but hot and tasted fine. Staff come around selling products from the in-flight catalogue at a reduced cost they are not pushy with any sales they merely travel up and down the aisle. We had no flight delays at all. We were met from the plane by 2 holiday reps and escorted to our coach, which was extremely comfortable and waiting on us. They counted and waited on every passenger even though 2 were missing they waited on confirmation they had made their own way to the resort before leaving although going round all the different apartments dropping people off was tedious as we were last off the coach. The reps were available on a free phone number included with your booking form for any emergencies. The reps also came to the apartments every morning for any queries and were always polite and very well dressed. Our returning home coach arrived in plenty of time to collect us and to pick up all the other guests from the surrounding apartments. The staff again were very polite on the coach and took us straight into the airport to the check in desk, as the only passengers on the flight were the ones travelling on the bus so there would be no delays.
** PRICE **
The price we paid for the holiday was for 2 adult and 5 children 18/12/04 to 25/12/04 to Benidrom. Total £997 including meals and sit-together. (No insurance taken - we used a cheaper insure and go insurance which I have written another review about) Prices are guaranteed to be the cheapest and I did go into a local travel agents to have them check the holiday out for me and search and they couldn't beat the price at all and said I would be better to book the deal online and that is exactly what I done.
You can book by phone instead of using the online booking but there is a booking fee for this service.
** CUSTOMER SERVICE **
I had to use customer service because we had a holiday emergency. My son took seriously ill within a few days of us arriving and ended up in hospital. The staff on the freephone number were very helpful and I could contact them anytime and they even liased with the insurance company for me and the non-English speaking hospitals. The emergency hospital rep was extremely helpful and was in contact even after family left to go home leaving me behind. Customer service found me the alternate accommodation when the original holiday end date passed and I had to stay behind with my son. I was booked into a very swanky hotel nearer the hospital that was part of the First Choice recommended as best that my insurance company covered. The rest of our party were offered to come home by the customer service but we decided to stay. Even after arriving home with my son I was contacted by the company to see if he was ok and check to see we were happy with the service we received.
There is a frequently asked questions part on the site or you can contact them by email or phone in the contact us section of the site.
** POSITIVES**
1. Prices are cheap and when you search the price per person is very near to the actually price you pay. I tried other sites and the charges were ridiculous on top of the shown price per person.
2. The child age on First Choice is 16 and under (not including all inclusive) which I thought was great because some of the searches the child prices stopped as young as 11 which is ridiculous.
3. The website is quick to respond and turn over from booking to receiving was amazing.
4. You can sign up to have any holidays matching your search emailed to you.
** NEGATIVES **
1. The in-flight meals are ok as a snack and save you taking food on the plane but if you have fussy eaters with you there isn't much of a choice and you could be wasting your money.
2. The emergency rep number in case of an accident cannot be called from many of the public payphones. If you have a reception desk you can use at the hotel then you are fine or access to a personal phone. This can be very frustrating when an emergency occurs. It can be called from the in shop phones and they will call you back at a set time if they need to. If I travel abroad again I will be taking an emergency mobile I don't care how much the calls cost.
4. After my son was taken into hospital we were 40 miles away from him and had to travel to get to see him, as the local hospital doesn't have a children's ITU. We spoke tot he rep about options of moving me and because we travelled as a whole party we had to be treated as one. We could either curtail the holiday and have the rest of the family (5 of them) returned home and me moved to another hotel nearer to him. Or we stayed until end of holiday and I travelled to hospital for the few days until everyone else went home and was then moved. We chose the 2nd option to save some kind of holiday for the other kids as my son was in ITU and I was only allowed to visit once a day for a short time anyway.
For your peace of mind when booking online, they encrypt your personal details and use secure servers for payments. This means any information you provide to them remains private. They use SSL technology with 128-bit encryption. Look out for the padlock at the bottom of your screen on the payment page or the http in the address bar where there will be an added s for secured https. This indicates a secure area and you can complete your credit/debit card details with no worries. If you are worried about security you can always book by telephone but it incurs a fee.
** MY HOLIDAY RECOMMENDATIONS **
1. I would recommend First Choice as the best and easiest I could find to search.
2. I wouldn't take the booking seats together option as I seen it as a waste of money as we would have been sitting together anyway because we arrived so early.
3. Take a credit card and mobile phone with you for emergencies. You will need them in an emergency. Get your E111 you will also need to produce it)
4. Don't take First Choice insurance option there are many competitive insurances online that will cover children for free at very competitive prices 3 times cheaper than with really good cover. (E111 isn't enough on its own I would have had to remortgage my house for the money I would have been out if I didn't have my £50 policy)
5. Sun cream silly thing but take it with you the stuff abroad is rubbish and you don't know what you are buying at all.
6. Get your money changed before you go. There are sites online with no fees and will send it special delivery next day and buy it back for a really good exchange rate. You will be ripped off abroad changing the money there. Only use your debit/credit card in an emergency, as the fees can be huge.
7. I would only go to a hotel or apartment named so I can check out online other peoples comments on the place. I checked the one we went to out before we went and seen it had a washing machine in the apartments and a problem with the doors locks being stuffed with toilet paper so the cleaners can enter without a key. It did have a machine in it and sure enough the locks on the 2 rooms we had did have toilet tissue in the lock that we removed only because I had read online it would probably be there.
8. If you are travelling with kids check out the arrangements locally where the nearest children's hospital is and where emergency doctors and pharmacist is. When an emergency occurs it is very difficult to get yourself together to find that information.
9. Keep a copy of all your insurance details with you as well as a copy with a member of family at home so you can have them as a back up too.
10. Enjoy yourself and don't worry about an accident or emergency arising. We coped really well when faced with it because we had went quite prepared. The medical treatment he received there was excellent. He had KETOACIDOSIS, which is a life threatening complication of undiagnosed diabetes and can be fatal in a very small amount of cases. We were lucky a quick acting Spanish emergency doctor saved my son's life. Don't hesitate to call an emergency doctor if your child is very sick. You do have to pay for them but your insurance will cover it when you get home. We called them out 2 nights in a row 1st night he was bad and they gave him a prescription and said it was a virus, 2nd night we were told he had less than 30 minutes to live and the doctors took us to the hospital in her own car as there wasn't enough time to call an ambulance and wait. He is back home safe on insulin injections now and doing really well.

Great review! We are flying with them next summer and booked premium class as we will have a 15 month old and feel we will need the extra little bit of room. Thanks!
