First Great Western run a service on a route that shares all of it's tracks with stopping trains. This causes quite a few delays and has resulted in FGW getting alot of flak over the past few years.
Regardless of the delays, FGW always put customer service first and are excellent at informing it's passengers of what is happening. Once on a trip to Cardiff our train was delayed for about an hour. We were given updates every ten minutes, and were offered complimentery food and drink for the delay. There have been other incidents where the same level of service has been applied, FGW truly excel in excellence when it comes to their customers.
The trains are very comfortable, mostly formed of the legendery 125mph High Speed Trains. These are still running well after 30 years and still provide a more comfortable and smooth ride than most other trains in the country (take note virgin!). The other newer trains are formed of brand new class 180 'Adelante's, which look rather sexy. Unlike the virgin voyager, these trains are actually very comfortable and provide a smooth ride. These are used mainly on the shorter-distance routes such as those to Cheltenham and Hereford, mainly due to their short formation and mild vibration when travelling at speed.
First Great Western were the first Intercity operator to be privatised, introduce a quiet coach, introduce a family coach, introduce new trains, and the first operator to fully refurbish it's fleet. Another fleet overhaul is due shortly and things are only going to improve.

Advantages: Fast & Efficient, Plenty of Seats, Buffet's Good, Children's Activities Disadvantages: Maybe a tad expensive - though deals can be found (but not on my route!)

Advantages: Pleasent Staff, always there to help! Disadvantages: No leg room, very dated, uncomfortable seating, and not enough space to put your luggage.
