For our five year anniversary just two nights ago my boyfriend surprised me and took me to the Fishermans Lodge. Which is located in the beautiful valley of Jesmond Dene on the edge of Newcastle Upon Tyne, just a five minute drive from the city center.
Oh my God how thrilled was I. I totally wasn't expecting him to ... ...We've been living in Newcastle for 18 months and everytime we go for a walk in the Dene we have a gander at the menu and salivate over the most amazing sounding dishes ever....... I couldn't believe it when our taxi headed into the Dean and I realised that he was actually going to take me THERE.

Oh my God how thrilled was I. I totally wasn't expecting him to take me there. It is very exclusive and very expensive. We've been living in Newcastle for 18 months and everytime we go for a walk in the Dene we have a gander at the menu and salivate over the most amazing sounding dishes ever....... I couldn't believe it when our taxi headed into the Dean and I realised that he was actually going to take me THERE.
Given it's location the Fishermans Lodge is very quite and exclusive, you certainly couldn't walk there so you don't get people just popping in from the street like everywhere else. The restaurant is famous for its fish and has won a number of fine dining awards. Aside from fish there are other options such as lamb, beef and venison and vegetarian choices on request. This is the kind of place where they are willing to cater for your every whim and need, definitely the kind of place to make a girl feel special!
We got there at 8pm and we were settled onto the sofas in the lounge/bar ares. Very nice. Very cosy and quiet with a big fire. We ordered a couple of pre-dinner drinks (this is the kind of place where you have to actually specify what kind of gin you want) and had a look at the menus while nibbling on the cananpes they brought us: seared tuna, goats cheese and farmhouse pate; lovely! The munu itself is incredible and we must have spent 20 minutes delibertaing over what to order......
The waiter took our order about 20 minutes after we arrived and eventually we were ushered into the dining area at about 8.30. Here we were offered a choice of homemade fresh breads; wholemeal, white rolls, parmesan or sun dried tomato with authentic French butter on the tables.
The dining area is small, cosy and stylish, composed of two seperate rooms which makes the experience much more intimate. The walls are a dark grey which sounds like a strange choice but combined with the soft lighting and music it really works very well. The restaurant wasn't full and there were a good few tables left empty throughout the night which was nice. This may have been because there was a wedding reception taking place (well I presume so as I saw a women in a big white dress when I was on my way to the loo).
For a starter I chose a trio of crab. This was three small dishes presented on a long thin glass platter. It almost looked too good to eat! The first dish was a brown crab mouuse, the second a crab and ginger samosa and the third dressed white crab in mayonnaise. It was divine. My partner has seared scallops and king-prawns on a bed of risotto which was also gorgeous.
For mains with both had the fillett of Northumbrian Beef with seared foie gras, wild mushrooms, caramelised onions and a Madeira jus. It also lived up to the expectations but I do wish we'd both chosen something different!
The Fishermans lodge is definitely the kind of place where you should expect to dine slowly and to relax with a nice bottle of wine, we were there for three hours which was a perfect amount of time to enjoy good food, good company and to be waited on hand and foot.
I didn't have a pudding because by this point I was suitably sated but Paul had a trio which consisted of a Vanilla and toffee parfait, caramel milkshake with White chocolate truffles. This selection was really too sweet for me as I don't have much of a sweet tooth but he really enjoyed it.
The munu is availble on line if you want to have a look. Some of the other options included smoked salmon served five ways or Lindisfarne oysters to start and other options on the main menu include lobster, halibut and seabass. The wine menu is also something to get very excited about and it is enormous. There is a whole page devoted to vintage Dom Perignon dating back to 1959 at £1250 (yes you read correctly) a bottle or would you rather a nice bottle of red at £1450 A BOTTLE. There cellars must be nothing short of enormous and very well alarmed to house that selection.....
Finally we retired to the bar at around 10.30 for coffee and homemade sweets (fudge and chocolate pots) untill out taxi arrived at 11 to whisk us back home.
Truely this is the nicest meal I have ever had it one of the most romatic and beautiful locations ever. I feel like a very very lucky girl. But of course you might be wondering about the price..... Our bill was £130 total and we tipped £10 because the staff we wonderful, accomodating and helpful. Two courses are £40 and three £50. We had a bottle of red wine which was around £17 (the cheapest available), pre-dinner drinks, bottled water on the table and coffee at £3.95 a pop. So yes very expensive but very very worth it. I can;t image that I am going to have a dining experience quite anythign like this one for a significant period of time.... (probably not for another five years).
The Fishermans Lodge is also available for conferences, weddings and parties if you really want to push the boat out. Additionally there is a prix fix lunch menu which is much more reasonable at £22.50 for three course. The menu is availble online if you would like some more information at http://www.fishermanslodge.co.uk/
Advantages: Locally sourced good quality ingredients used Disadvantages: Overpriced and dire service
Dined on a Thursday evening in January 2008 with my husband and we were sadly disappointed. Service was dreadful! We waited a full hour for our starters - booked for 8 and finally got them at 9. They seemed to have quite a few large business groups in that night and they seemed very overstretched. Food was very well cooked and presented but I couldn't help feeling the combinations were slightly pretentious in that they had been chosen to demonstrate ... ...was not what I expected at the price, in particularly the service. Taxi driver who took us home when we finally finished (11.35pm!) told us he had heard the same complaint from diners quite a few times of late. We would not rush back as there are many better dining experiences in the area at much more reasonable prices. What a shame! Summary: Service dire. Food well cooked but slightly pretentious. ...

Advantages: Your wallet won't be as heavy. Disadvantages: over priced, remote, arrogant
You would have thought with a name like fishermans lodge, the menu would be brimming with seafood delights, sadly no. Fish, fish and more fish - how about a bit of seafood variety - you ever hear of a prawn or calamari? . Frankly £40 for 2 courses - all I can say is RIPOFF!! -very little of interest in the menu. I literally grimaced when my girlfriend wanted to order the smoked salmon entree AND they have the audacity to charge extra for side plates ... ...a cigarette I was told there was no smoking on the premises and I had to go outside into the rain, cold and wind and around to the patio where the entire restaurant can watch you shiver - thanks very much!. One was not amused.
Avoid this if you have sense. ...

Advantages: Best restaurant in Newcastle. Disadvantages: Quite costly and off the beaten track.
The food here is among the best that I have eaten. The service is simply second to none. The meal will cost you quite a lot, especially if you have wine with it. The other problem is that you either need to drive or take a taxi as it is quite a distance from buses or the metro.
The menu mainly consists of seafood or fish but there is usually steak also. I have had the Guinea fowl here and ir is lovely, as is the quail starter.
The dover sole melts ...
