A typical cheap and tacky place, full of cheap and tacky shops, selling cheap and tacky merchandise - T shirts, hats, screaming out 'I paid over the odds for this' There are the usual fast food outlets selling cardboard burgers etc. trouble is, they attract the scavenging birds who repay you by depositing their droppings from a great height. One thing I noticed was the smell - then I found out that there were about a 100 or so seals just close to the wharf - the noise and the smell still live with me !! So briefly, Fishermans Wharf is an ideal place to part with your money, but personally, I would avoid the place
Advantages: Amazing and versitile city Disadvantages: That l had to come back to reality - boo hoo
Alcatraz l had to pre book tickets ? it really is that popular an attraction. To do so go to www.blueandgoldfleet.com ? this is the only tour company running scheduled ferries from Fisherman?sWharf to the Island. Our tour cost $16 each and this included an audio tour of the cell house. I would recommend this great tour. You follow the lines of your feet and listen to former prisoners and wardens talk about ?The Rock?.
The cell house is really rundown and worn, but this really adds to the atmosphere of the place, the spooky eeriness of what must have been hell on earth. Step inside a minuscule cell and image the confinement or pop into solitary and shut the door, try and stop yourself panicicking ? they really shut men up in these black boxes for weeks on end. This is really one trip in San Francisco that you cannot miss.

Advantages: Good value for money, convenient location Disadvantages: Noisy heating, coffee issues
a few blocks away run to the shopping area of Union Square. We walked down to Fillmore some days to get the 22 bus to Haight-Ashbury and the Mission. Touristy Fisherman?sWharf is not far away, and nor is the Ferry Building or North Beach. A popular tourist attraction, the city?s ?crookedest street? is just a few blocks east of the hotel, as is Macondray Lane, immortalised as Barbary Lane in Armistead Maupin?s novel Tales of the City. Enough rambling! I will not go into more detail here because I plan to write more about our holidays in San Francisco in a separate review of the city.

This hotel has 72 rooms, some at ground floor level, and more above ? there is a picture at the website. Last year we had a room up the stairs and away from the street, but this time when offered the choice at reception, Mikey plumped ...
Advantages: A Unique Experience Disadvantages: No refreshments available
and it was now looking forward to a new era.
In 1969 the island was occupied once again by native Indian people when a group of Mohawk and Sioux Indians arrived to symbolically once again claim the island as their own. They quickly re-colonised the island and set about trying to establish it as a centre to preserve their dwindling language and culture, it turned out to be a full-scale operation that was to last until June 1971.
In 1972 after the last of the Indian people had abandoned their dreams the island was taken over by the National Park Service who still maintain the island today.
Nowadays they operate a popular tourist attraction as a way of celebrating its rich and varied history and preserving it for future generations to enjoy forever.
