I suppose you can't really avoid it, particularly if you are going across to Alcatraz, but try !!!
A typical cheap and tacky place, full of cheap and tacky shops, selling cheap and tacky merchandise - T shirts, hats, screaming out 'I paid over the odds for this' There are the usual fast food outlets selling cardboard burgers etc. trouble is, they attract the scavenging birds who repay you by depositing their droppings from a great height.
One thing I noticed was the smell - then I found out that there were about a 100 or so seals just close to the wharf - the noise and the smell still live with me !!
So briefly, Fishermans Wharf is an ideal place to part with your money, but personally, I would avoid the place

What a shame you found it such a terrible place. I suppose most touristy places are like this. Fionaxx
