Centerpiece of Christchurch

Advantages: Wonderful view from spire, interesting decor, great central location near other sites, free
Disadvantages: Quite busy

Christchurch is my favourite city in New Zealand. It is modern and happening, whilst still retaining a very refined and serene atmosphere, with its willow-banked river creeping through the city centre, benches in small gardens for people to pass time on, and lovely old buildings. The centrepiece of Christchurch would have to be its gothic-style cathedral. It is located in the attractively cobbled Cathedral Square, which is packed with people enjoying street performers, including jugglers and the famous Wizard of Christchurch, an official living monument who is a site in himself, preaching on all kinds of topics from a step ladder, tourists playing giant chess, marketstalls, baton twirlers, choirs, sculptures, cafes and bars. A Musical Camelot

Advantages: Well it is a musical.
Disadvantages: If you don't like musicals you won't enjoy this

CAMELOT I own an extensive collection of musicals, well all kinds of movies really, but I tend to review my musicals more than anything else. Camelot is not I feel an outstanding musical, I should imagine a lot of people have not heard of it, I think before seeing it again over the last week I had only watched it once before when I was a child. ~~The film~~ I put the disc into my DVD player and it slips straight into the Overture and the start of the movie, which is quite disconcerting as usually you go through the options on the menu first. Anyway, the film starts with King Arthur played by Richard Harris sitting in the woods just outside Camelot, talking to Merlin (in his minds eye) and just before he goes into battle, he reflects on his life and the camera takes us back to a snow covered wood and a much younger ...

A beautiful cathedral

Advantages: Beautiful cathedral and friendly guides
Disadvantages: None

On a recent short break to Ripon in North Yorkshire, and having a liking for cathedrals as I do, I took the time to visit Ripon Cathedral with my partner. Located just five minutes walk from the market square area of Ripon town centre, the cathedral is very easy to reach. There is also a car park a couple of minutes walk from the cathedral. Ripon Cathedral is unusual in that, in common with only one other Cathedral in the country, it also functions as a Parish Church. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A LITTLE HISTORY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Cathedral building itself began in the 7th century when St Wilfrid built one of England's first stone churches on the site. St Wilfrid was educated at Lindisfarne and then travelled to Rome in 652. On his return, he became abbot of a Benedictine monastery and built a church in Ripon. The crypt of the church is ...
