We stayed at the Flamingo Playa Apartments in May 2006 for a 2 week self-catering family holiday, 2 adults and 2 children, which we booked through Thomson for £800 (we managed to get both of our children on a free child place as we had other adults travelling with us).
When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by the receptionist in and were able to check in pretty swiftly. The only problem we had initially was that my sister had pre-booked the use of a cot through Thomson, which cost her £40.00. When she enquired about this at the reception before we went to our apartments she was told that she would have to pay again for it and that Thomson should not have charged her for the cot in the first place! She ended up paying £80 all in all for use of the cot.
When we got into our apartment I was surprised at how small they were compared to how they looked in the brochure but was pleasantly surprised by the size of the balcony which spanned both the living area and the bedroom with patio doors leading from each room. I have never stayed in an apartment before so have nothing to compare it to, but I thought it was a bit too small for a family of four. The cleanliness of the apartment left a lot to be desired, there was dust everywhere and the bathroom was rather grubby. The cleaners only came in four times whilst we were there and then only mopped the bathroom and the hallway area! Our towels were only changed on these occasions too. The view from the balcony was okay and you could see the pool area from almost every balcony as they all face the same way. The living area had a small unit with a TV on with a few English channels (although you had to pay 1 euro to watch).
After unpacking what we could fit into the two wardrobes (again not enough space), we got ready to go to the pool area. The sun beds around the pool will set you back 1.50 euros per day (although we only paid once as quite often people who were leaving would offer their bed). The pools were a good size and there were separate areas for the little ones too. The bar area had pool tables, games machines and sweet machines to keep the children occupied too (Be expected to hear - Can I have a Euro please?, many a time if you have children!). The bar area was pleasant and had plenty of seating, they often had happy hours but we did not really stay in the hotel in the evening so cannot really comment too much on this.
There was a small shop attached to the hotel which sold most things that you would need for a self catering holiday and the hotel was perfectly situated if you preferred to eat out as there were plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. It was a bit of a walk down to the beach (about 10 mins) but we did not find it a struggle at all.
The staff at hotel were always pleasant and we could not fault them at all, the Thomson reps were around a lot too, which we found helpful. A word of warning, we heard of poeple being mugged just behind the hotel whilst we were there so be aware and careful if out on your own or are elderley.
All in all the holiday was enjoyed by everyone but I would not make the Flamingo Playa a first choice for another holiday.
