The Duomo

Advantages: The world famous Duomo -must go
Disadvantages: No

...place in Florence is the Duomo which seats right in the centre of the city. It forms the city's skyline and it's also the symbol of the city. . The legendary duomo is famous for its dome: Brunelleschi's Renaissance masterpiece, completed in 1436, created a double dome shell so that the dome is entirely self-supporting. The frescoes inside the dome depict the Last Judgement. and it's one of the most fantastic religious painting I've ever seen. Personally ...

The Accademia

Advantages: Nice
Disadvantages: No

There are two main museums in Florence that are worth visiting. In my last trip to Florence, I've chosen the Accademia. The reason behind this decision is because of the Statue of David by Michelangelo. The gallery is perhaps best-known for Michelangelo's David, removed after four centuries from Piazza Signoria, now exhibited in a specially constructed hall. Personally, I have come across many replicas of the statue, from places as far as Gold Coast ...
...to 1 1/2 to finish looking at all the exhibition, but you will find many works by the famous Michelangelo. Some examples are his "Slave" series and his sculpture of San Matteo. Also featured in the gallery is an impressive collection of religious paintings from the 13th to 16th century. ...

FLO'S AULD BRIG

Advantages: Stunning medieval/renaissance structure
Disadvantages: None

...in its path. Not the PONTE VECCHIO though. Although it's thought that there's been a crossing here since Etruscan times, the bridge that spans the river today is far more recent...relatively speaking. Today's Ponte Vecchio was built in 1345 by Taddeo Gaddi (not single-handedly, I assume) and replaced an earlier one which, you've guessed it, was destroyed by a flood. Many enterprising souls quickly set up business on the bridge to cash in on the ...
...thrown in...not literally. The Ponte Vecchio is not only the oldest bridge in Florence, it's also the only bridge that predates WW2. In 1944, the retreating nazis were ordered to destroy all the bridges over the Arno to try and halt the advancing allies, but those orders were disobeyed, and the bridge remained. However, where some far-sighted nazi officer showed compassion, Mother Nature wasn't so accommodating. During the flood of 1966, all the ...

Absolutely breath-taking

Advantages: Beautiful
Disadvantages: None

Its the image that comes to mind when people think of Florence. The huge cathedral with the enormous dome and the bell tower by its side are awe-inspiring to look at. ACCESS The Cathedral is located right in the centre of Florence. You can't really miss it because of the enormous dome and the bell tower which stands along side it. I'm not sure about the local public transport becuase I walked everywhere, its so central that you won't need anything ...
...walk from the main train station as well. The Cathedral itself is free, but you have to pay for all the extras, such as going up into the dome, the museum, the bell tower and the baptistry and these can add up to around 20 Euros if you do all of them, so beware! THE VISIT The cathedral was begun at the end of the 13th century, but was added to right up until the 19th century. It was not actually consecrated until around 140 years after it was ...
