Ok, this is not an exhaustive review - that's been done (very well done) before (see previous reviews). What I can add is up-to-date info. I was there in August 2004.
One thing missed from some earlier reviews...if the uffizi has a bit queue go to the galleria accademia and see the devlopment of Michaelangelo's sculpting career and see the original David. 10 euro admission. The bell tower next to the cathederal gives awsome views of the city. 6 euros
Accomodation: The campsite at piazzale michaelangelo, up on the hill overlooking Florence has an amazing view. It's very convenient for the city centre and can be reached on bus number 13 from the train station. It's 4.50 euro for a 24 hour bus ticket. REMEMBER! everywhere in Italy you buy a bus ticket from a tabacco / newagent shop them stamp it on the bus! The campsite is very busy in summer. It does not take bookings (for backpackers) so arrive early in the afternoon if possible. It's not the greatest site (no pool, poor kids play area) but has a great restaurant opposite which is better than many in the city centre.
Eating: There are many beautiful retaurants i Florence, many at reasonable prices. I reccommend the Lonely Planet guide to Italy for a selection of the best and best value places, but the campsit resturant is hard to beat. IN ITALY many restaurants charge a COVER CHARGE of between 1 and 5 euro. This is very irritating, especially if travelling with chldren. An adult and two children may pay 15 euro just to be in the restaurant! After a few days this makes a big dent in the budget!
Getting there: Fly to pisa (Ryanair - guess the web site - I'm not allowed to tell you..booo) Train from pisa is 100km, 1 hour, six euro) From Milan the Eurostar is 2hrs 45min, 55 euro and a bit less from Rome. Trenitalia has a fantastic web site and is that name plus a dot then it (for italy).
A beautiful city, fantastic architecture great ambience and fab food. Don't forget - cappucino is for breakfast! Only crazy tourists have it as an after dinner drink... If you can't take the espresso (note: not eXpressso) try machiato (with a dob of frothy milk) or the more familiar latte.
A short review? Could have written more? Don't tell me. I'm not looking for blue dots! If you are going to Florence just mail me for more info!
