KLM has, by far, the best Frequent Flier program than other airline in the world today.
KLM itself enjoys a good reputation, in aviation circles, as being reliable, on time and providing excellent service in the air and on the ground.
They call their Frequent Flier program the “Flying Dutchman”.
Anyone can become a member of the program by simply picking up a form at any KLM office, the KLM check-in desk at the airport and some major travel agencies or even on the internet from their website.
The form contains a temporary card that you can start using straight away, until you receive the actual card in the post.
KLM have extended partnerships with several other airlines such as Northwest Airlines, Air Lingus, Japan Airlines, Malaysian Airlines and several others.
Each time you fly with KLM or any of their partners you earn points.
The amount of points varies between the sectors and the class you travel. Naturally you will earn more points for longer flights or if you are in Business Class instead of Economy.
These points can then be redeemed for flights, upgrades, Duty Free vouchers or leisure packages with KLM’s partners in the Flying Dutchman program.
You will also receive special attention wherever you travel with them worldwide and this could range from either free use of the Business Class lounge, free upgrades or extra baggage allowance.
There are three different levels of entry into this program. Each has its own Membership Card. These levels are BlueWing, SilverWing, and RoyalWing.
When you become a member for the first time you are given a BlueWing card and if you earn a certain number of points or complete a certain number of flights you will be upgraded to the SilverWing level and subsequently the RoyalWing level. Basically the more you travel with them then the higher your level of card. Also once you reach a certain level you must maintain the minimum travel (points earned) for that level, otherwise you will be downgraded to the lower level. If you are already on the lower level (BlueWing) your card is still valid forever, even if you don’t travel for very long periods of time.
The points required for each level and maintaining each level, is clearly stated on their website at www.klm.com (then click on the Flying Dutchman link).
The benefits to you differ for each level.
BlueWing cardholders are entitled to corporate rates at many major hotels worldwide. Also late check in/check out and free enrollment in the respective hotels own Priority Programs.
Silver Wing cardholders are entitled to the above aswell as free access and usage of all KLM and their partners, Business Class lounges worldwide. Also priority on seats and 10 Kilos of free excess baggage allowance.
Royal Wing cardholders are entitled to all of the above aswell as access to special Royal Wing lounges in selected airports and First Class lounges. Also a confirmed seat on any flight provided you book 72 hours before departure. You also get 20 Kilos of free excess baggage allowance.
There are several more benefits for each level and these can all be read and understood from their brochure, on the Flying Dutchman, or from their website.
All KLM offices worldwide have a special team of people only for the Flying Dutchman program. Therefore you will always receive prompt and personalized attention.
When you have accumulated enough points for an award you can either contact the nearest KLM office or you can access their website, enter your membership number and a PIN number (which can be obtained once you get your card) and apply for your award.
One of the great things about this Program is the number of points that you are given for each flight. It is a lot more than other Programs and therefore a lot more profitable to you.
I traveled last year on a total of four flights, with them, to Africa and the Far East and I am already eligible for a Free Ticket to West Africa and back.
You can also earn points by other means. You earn points whenever you purchase anything at any shop in Schipol Airport in Amsterdam. You earn points whenever you rent a car with Avis (they are one of their partners). You earn points whenever you stay at any Golden Tulip Hotel (KLM subsidiary).
One of my friends, who has a Silver Wing card, traveled just this month to Bombay and back and on both sectors. Amsterdam to Bombay and Bombay to Amsterdam, he was upgraded to Business Class inspite of holding an Economy Class ticket.
This Frequent Flier Program beats any other similar program all ends up. Maybe that is why it is the single most successful and most used program in the world today.
Visit their website at: www.klm.com for more information on this very useful Program.
Advantages: Good reward rate, many options to spend Disadvantages: All flights routed through Amsterdam
I've been flying with KLM on business for about 6 years now, and have found the program excellent.
The program is easy to join, you can pick up a leaflet at check in on a KLM flight, or even on the plane itself. The application form contains a push out temporary card, so that you can start collecting straight away. You can also join easily through the helpful KLM web site (www.klm.co.uk)
When I first joined I'd already flown a few trips, but on ... ...the full miles. I even once received a free upgrade to business class on a long haul flight and was pleasantly surprised when I received my next membership statement that I'd been credited with business class miles.
Statements are sent out monthly, and are clear on concise, detailing miles earnt in month, total miles, and also how many award miles or flights are required for you to get up to the next level of membership (including the date you must ...

Advantages: Easy to become Royal Wing flying a few Long haul flights. Disadvantages: Flying short haul in Europe may take up to 30 flights.
KLM Flying Dutchman programme is my faveroute I have been a member for over 4 years and this is one of the easiest to move up to a higher level, with relatively few flights as long as they are long haul.
3 Flights in Economy to Hong Kong in one year and you will become a Royal Wing member. A lot of people fly regularily but with the right choice of airline they can get the reward. Such as Access to the KLM and Northwest lounges and this then available ... ...for space available upgrades when flying Northwest from Economy to First class flying domestically in the United States.
Overall one of the most friendly and when you redeem points for flights they dont charge airport tax like the others. Cool huh!!!
The best uses for the points are to combine flights one ways this can even give you the best value as multi destination flights in Europe can be very expensive.
Fling Round trip to Hong Kong you get ...

Advantages: Free flights, Baggage allowance, great service Disadvantages: Sometimes changing in amsterdam is infeasible due to bad connection times
I have been enrolled for about 2 years with this and other frequent flyer clubs and this is by far the best.
Although I am only at the standard blue membrership level as i am not really a "frequent flyer" having flown within europe only a handful of times I have already been able to get a free flight award which would have otherwise cost me about 400 euros.
My other frequent flyer memberships look like i may have to be a member for decades before ... ...many partners which can issue miles such as car hire, hotels and shops.
I would always try, if timetables permit to fly with KLM as they have a good coverage of UK airports and unlike britains other carriers the price does not double when you need to fly to a non-london airport.
The customer service I have received from KLM has likewise always been fantastic. Whether the flights run according to schedule or there is a problem the staff are always ...

...few years now. THe Flying Dutchman club is probably one of the best frequent flyer programmes although it is a little complex in its operation. Three different levels entitle the member to different levels of service and access to different lounges. Points can be collected for flights with KLM and partners as well as hotels and car hire. The only downside to the Flying Dutchman club is the lack of service by KLM staff. To say they are dreadful is ...

Used Malaysian for international (LHR - KL) after previously flying Singapore Airlines. Not sure what to expect after a friend had experienced something of a dodgy stomach following a LHR inbound flight. That said, extremely pleasantly surprised. Flights (took a total of 7 both international and domestic) all on time with clean, modern aircraft. Inflight entertainment on 747 - 400 (trans-continental) flights excellent with seat back screens with choice of movie channels and games. Certainly helped fill the time for the flight (12.5 hours).
Don't forget to enrol with KLM's FlyingDutchman frequent flyers club as valuable mileage is awarded on ALL Malaysian flights. Well worth doing.
Food - international flights no problem. Domestic - very localised - but nice.
Price - about the same as Singapore Airlines. ...
Advantages: Like flying used to be Disadvantages: Sadly very restricted in where they go
because there's absolutely nothing to do. Since none of the destinations are covered by duty free, there's very little to buy in the shop. You can buy alcohol but since the shop is on the landside rather than airside, you'll have to shop BEFORE you check in so your booze can go in your bag. It's all very weird.
VLM is part of the Air France/KLM group. The V stands for Vlaamse (which is Flemish for 'Flemish') and the LM stands for whatever it is that the LM in KLM stands for (the K in that case is Dutch for 'royal'). I'm told that within a few months the VLM flights will be more integrated into the KLM/Air France organisation and should be eligible for KLMFlyingDutchman loyalty points which will be nice as I have a load of those already and must check they don't expire although it will be sad if the VLM name and livery disappear completely ...
