I fully recommend anyone and everyone visiting the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy.
It is the most magical place i have ever been and it truly takes your breath away. I recommend you going at night if it is possible as the lighting behind the fountain show's it at its best.
The fountain itself is not the same as you would maybe imagine ... if you have never seen photos that is. It is not something that you walk all the way round for example, it is actually all on a wall of a Palazzo.
The first fountain at the site was built in 1453 by Pope Nikolaus V., financed from wine-taxes. In 1732 Clemens XII ordered the current fountain to be built, and about 30 years later his predecessor Clemens XIII christined it. It is suspected that the architect was Nicola Salvi, but that is not a known fact. The sculpture in the middle is Neptun or Oceanus. The 2 tritons were created by Pietro Bracci: the left one trying to tame a fiery horse (symbolizing the rough sea), and the right one blowing a shell-horn (symbolizing the quiet sea).
The Trevi fountain is colossol in size and you really cant belive how big and impressive it is without visiting ...
According to legend, it is lucky to throw coins with one's right hand over one's right shoulder into the Trevi Fountain. Throwing one coin in will ensure that the thrower will return to Rome. Throwing two coins ensures that the thrower will fall in love with a beautiful Roman girl (or handsome boy), and throwing three coins ensures that the thrower will marry that girl or boy in Rome.
If you Google Trevi Fountain you will get some beautiful pictures and you can actually see how big the fountain is!!
The other amazing thing about the place is that you are in Rome!! So while you are there you have some other amazing sites to visit .... the colosseum, spanish steps (right near the fountain), the forum, the pantheon and the circus maximus to name just a few!! Not to mention all the exclusive designer shops!!
You would be mad not to visit this place at some point in your life, and dont forget to throw your coin in!!
You can visit the Trevi fountain anytime and there is no charge as its in a public place .... i recommend you go at night when it is lit up but i have heard that it is also very impressive at dawn!
