Forbidden City also has Mandarin and English tourist speakers at some important sites. Better to ask the time and you would not miss it if you want.
Compared to Tower of London, it is bigger a lot. There is a very small tea room. So better to dress comfortably and take some water with you.
Personally, I think 4 hours of visit is reasonable.

There you can see Chinese Ancient buildings that are the biggest and most preserved buildings group in the world. Do remember these buildings closely connect Chinese culture especially their philosophy in harmony. You can also see treasures exhibitions, e.g. some very rare jades and ancient clocks.
It is located in the centre of Beijing. Many buses and a subway pass by. It has 4 gates to get in. Better to get there by subway and leave in the Tiananmen Eastern station and to start your trip from the south gate entrance.
You can get an electrical tourist guide. Many languages are available. Do remember keep your receipt. When you return the guide you can get part of your payment back.

Advantages: It's a great insight to the living and breathing history of life in Beijing from the local perspective Disadvantages: If you go indepently you may get lost.
The Hutongs are a large expanse of "ancient alleyways" (semi- literal translation) which house a large number of Bejing's families right in the heart of the city.
It is really worth visiting, as it gives a more grassroots perspective on living and breathing in Beijing as opposed to the vast imperialpalaces like the ForbiddenCity.
