The total population of the country of San Marino is only about 25,000, so why does it get a Grand Prix? Well, it can only be because of Ferrari and the obsession that their fans have with F1 racing, that gets Italy two races every year.

Imola is of course not in San Marino, as the whole country is only 24 square miles they would probably have difficulty even finding space for a race track in the mountainous countryside.

Imola is about 50 miles from San Marino in Italy, about 20 miles from Bologna. The circuit has existed for about 50 years and has a number of names in it’s history and is now known as “Autodromo Enzo and Dino Ferrari”. The San Marino Grand Prix has been held here for about 20 years, and the circuit has also been used for the Italian Grand Prix.

The circuit is notoriously hard on brakes with 18 corners and quite a lot of gradient around the track. In my opinion this really tests the skill of the drivers as the best drivers will preserve their brakes and also conserve fuel as the hard braking and acceleration is heavy on fuel use. There have been quite a few occasions in previous races when drivers have run out of fuel.

Imola is also one of only two Grand Prix circuits that are raced in an anti-clockwise direction (Sao Paulo is the other one) and the 62 laps are as demanding on the drivers as they are on the cars.

The circuit normally produces some wonderful racing, although unfortunately it has some tragic history to it, in particular the 1994 race when both Ayton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger were killed.

Let us hope that in the future there are no more tragedies and look forward to some really great racing.
