The hype before a race at Monza is a little exaggerated. The Tifosi are mostly responsible for this although they do make the atmosphere at race-time electric and as I am a Michael Schumacher fan, they make it for all the right reasons in my opinion.
However, Monza is not much of a race-track compared to the magnificent SPA circuit in Belgium which will host the 2000 season's venue in Belgium, this weekend. I am quite excited.
Monza is a fast track which provides a lot of action. Hakkinen in tears, Coulthard taking Irvine round the outside on the last third gear sweeper leading on to the pitstraight (the name of the corner evades me at this time). It is undoubtedly a much better venue than Silverstone but it is not, in my view, THE best circuit although it isn't far off. Suzuka, Spa, Imola, Monaco - its there somewhere. When deciding for yourself which is the best track, you have to decide what are you differentiating them on. Track layout, speed or action produced by that circuit? If it were speed, of course Hockenheim would win, but Hockenheim isn't a real drivers circuit and it doesn't have a particularly challenging layout. Hockenheim also provides a lot of action, but not as much as Spa nor Monza.
Monza is good, but not THE best.
