Atmosphere ---------- If you are used to excitable fans, flocking crowds and general razamatazz that follows formula One, then Austria draws a sharp contrast to your expectations. The circuit in Spielberg, Austria, known as the A1 ring, is far from being the most exciting place on earth. Despite producing world champions (Jochen Rindt and Nikki Lauda) the fans do not seem to be that interested in Grand Prix racing. The circuit is never sold out. This is a shame when you consider countries are crying out to hold one of these prestigious events. The grandstands are half full and its had to get the crowd interested.
Layout ------ It is a very short lap at A1. It takes only about 70-75 seconds a lap compared to 80-100 seconds at some circuits. Its more like a go Kart track. Essentially it is 3 main straights, interconnected by a series of corners. Turn One and turn Two are quite tight by modern standards and normally result in a crash or two. The grand prix weekend is basically the only use the track will get during the year so it takes some time to "clean". This means that there is a layer of dust and dirt on the track which greatly affects grip from the tyres. It takes a few laps to get some rubber down and ready for racing. This is why drivers leave it very late to take to the track in qualifying. No one wants to go out and waste laps preparing the track. The track is also far from flat. Undulating the whole way round, you can see why by the picturesque mountains in the background.
This season's race ------------------ Qualifying was tight with Michael Shumacher setting the pace with Williams improving to qualify 2nd and 3rd. Th Maclarens were off the pace somewhat on Saturday with both cars stuck on Row 4. Come raceday, the start was a shambles with 4 cars being left behind on the grid. The new electronic driver aids seem to be plaguing some teams still. A tussle for the lead saw Shumacher and Montoya take each other off and slip down the field. From all of the confusion, Arrows were having a good race in 2nd util gremlins intervened. Coulthard up to 2nd, took the lead away from Barrichello and led to the flag. On the last corner, team orders forced Barrichello over and let Schumi take 2nd and an extra 2 championship points.
Conclusion ---------- An eventful race on an average circuit. In my opinion, this race should be given to a country more deserving af grand prix racing and one that can add more excitement.
