As we drove it got cloudier and cloudier and then it started to rain. I had expected it to be raining and I think it really added to the effect of it being Scotland. If it was bright and clear I don’t think it would have been quite so, well, authentic an experience. The scenery had begun to be more dramatic. The hills had become taller and the woods thicker. ...
...Linnhe is the loch that Fort William overlooks and when we arrived at the town, it was a very comforting feeling that even though the wilderness can be dangerous, all the mod-cons are still available as long as you can get to a sizeable town like Fort William.

We saw numerous guest houses, hotels and hostels and I had it very much in my intentions to stay in a fair-sized hotel with a bar and a roaring fire; a hotel that we could make ... more

~~*~~ INTRODUCTION ~~*~~ Fort William - a delightful place to visit - before I went there 2 summers ago I assumed it was just a fort and not a whole new wonderful holiday experience! Hmm how wrong could I have been? The place where both Rob Roy and Braveheart were filmed, it's definitely a place to see if you believe in exploring the UK's finest places. I'm not an expert at writing travel reviews so please bear with me if this review isn't laid out ...

My husband and I left on a Sunday morning at around 9 a.m. as we'd been to a friend's 30th birthday party the night before and our intended 7 a.m. start got a bit delayed… We stopped a couple of times along the way for a bite to eat and to stretch our legs. ...

Where My Heart Lives

Advantages: lots to do for everyone
Disadvantages: midgies

...a moment to explain why Fort William means so much to me personally. My name is Katie MacFarlane and I am part of the MacFarlane clan, my sector of the Clan originated from Loch Lomond and Fort William. Up until 35 years ago my father lived in Fort William and had lived there all his live. His mother (my Gran) still lives there very near the foot of Ben Nevis. This is one of the reasons I love Fort William so much as it is always nice to return to ...
...We either travel to Fort William by car or coach. It is possible to go by train but you can miss a lot of the scenery going that way. If you are travelling by car the best route to take (from Glasgow) is to follow the Great Western Road over the Erskine Bridge and to continue alongside Loch Lomond and through Glen Coe. If travelling by car keep an eye out for the Green Welly Boot Stop Shop which is about halfway to Fort William from Glasgow and is ...

Disadvantages: Can't think of any

...later in the opinion. Fort William stands at the foot of Ben Nevis and provides an ideal stopping place both for the holiday maker touring the Highlands or for the climber planning to scale Britain’s highest peak. Just a little bit of history for you, the fort of Fort William was built in the 17th century and demolished in the 1850’s. The main part of the town is based around one long main street, which provides a good shopping centre. ...
...miles to the east of Fort William is the gondola lift, which takes visitors one and a half miles up Aonach Mor, which is one of the mountains neighbouring Ben Nevis. I admit I went on this under sufferance as I am not good with heights at the best of times, but my partner really wanted to go so off we went. I am really glad that I did (now I’m back on terra firma!). The view from the top was wonderful and the view from the car, when I opened ...

...have been on holiday to Fort William almost every year since I was 3 months old. I have always gone with my family, as my Dad and a friend like to go for the hill walking in the area, which of course, is fabulous around here. Fort William is a great base for a huge variety of different walks, to suit all ages, levels and experience. An ideal base to tour the Highlands

Advantages: Central to the west coast of the Highlands.
Disadvantages: The east coast will be out of reach.

Fort William is an ideal base from which to see the best sights of Scotland. I decided to visit Scotland on my motorbike and neaded a base from which I could see as much as possible. Fort William hosts an excellent shopping centre and is central for the west coast. One of the activities most people try is a climb up Ben Nevis. It's best to get there really early as this is a very popular activity. It is also wise to take warm clothing and stout ...
...you follow the road from Fort William to Inverness you will come across the Loch Ness visitor centre. This place shows all the activities surrounding the monster and the efforts to find it. Well worth a visit. If you travel south you will come to Oban, a fishing village, and around this area are a host more sights to see. One that springs to mind, but can't remember it's name, is a power station that is built into the side of a mountain. It's a ...

A ruin near Fort William

Advantages: tranquil spot
Disadvantages: none

We stayed on the west coast of Scotland for our holidays and had to go into the nearest big town Fort William. After spending the morning there we headed out along the A 82 to wards Inverness After only about a mile there is a small sign and a turn to Inverlochy castle. A map can be found at. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=212500&y=775500&z=3&sv=212500,77550 0&st=4&ar=N&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf. The castle is on the edge of the town in a semi industrial area. After we too the turn we note a car park in front of us we decide not to take it, but turned right over a wooden bridge where we found free parking in another car park. The castle was situated between the two. It seems quite tranquil around the immediate castle are We had taken a packed lunch with us to eat at the castle so we strolled to the castle ...

London/Scotland Sleeper Trains

Advantages: arrive refreshed in city centre
Disadvantages: sometimes delayed & expensive

A good option fo anyone travelling to London from Scotland but especially from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Fort William or Aberdeen is to travel overnight on the Scotrail sleeper train. For tourists this can be a much more convenient option to journeying by plane as 1 nights accomodation is already paid for, there is a chance to see scenery & you will not be arriving at an airport 1 hour from the city centre. If booked in advance this can also be a cheaper ticket than travelling on the other 2 train options, Virgin & GNER. Be warned to check with Scotrail before booking a ticket to travel on a Sunday that there is frequently engineering work taking place overnight and this can cause horrendous delays to the Sleeper services if the work is not completed ontime. The Fort William service especially can crawl in hours late due to there ...

Disadvantages: Unpredictable weather, food could be tatsier

of Fort William, Scotland. Setting the scene ************** The Nevis Range is situated about three miles away from the highest mountain of Ben Nevis. The mountain that the tourist complex is situated on is part of the same range and it is called Aonach Mor. This aspect was a little disappointing, as I had believed that we would be going up THE Mountain, but once there I soon got over that initial let down. We were staying in Inverness and hired a car to enable us to travel along the A82. This road leads from Inverness to Fort William so is called the Old Fort William Road by the locals. The journey is about 65 miles and it took about an hour and forty minutes. That was driving through heavy rain showers and we also stopped off along the way at tourist viewpoints by the Loch Ness (the A82 runs parallel to the Loch). It was ...
