Advantages: A Stretch of Coastline with Villas and Architecture from a Ggolden Era Disadvantages: None
charm.
The 35 kilometre coast road (Estrada Marginal) is very busy and if you do choose to walk from Estoril to Cascais be very careful because this road is a nightmare and the driving is insane. The noise of the traffic is so loud you will not be able to hear yourself speak. The road is bordered by old and new villas, satelite developments, parks, historic fortresses and agricultural land. During summer weekends, day trippers pour out of Lisbon and make for the beaches among this section of coast. Cascais and Estoril have good rail links and are ideal as bases from which to explore Lisbon and its environs.
The grand villas and hotels of Estoril testify to the international appeal that the resort once enjoyed. For me, Estoril has all the qualities of a high class resort, with its casino, beatiful hotels like the famous Palacio Hotel ...
Advantages: Handy for Cascais Disadvantages: Not pushchair friendly, limited choice
The big brother to Cascais centre's Cascais Villa, this shopping centre is located about 15 min. to the North of the town centre - expect to pay about 6 euro if you're taking a taxi from the station. It's got a reasonable range of stores, with a large Continente supermarket , FNAC, Zara & Zara Home, Area, Toys R Us and various clothes / gifts / homeware shops, plus restaurants,on site. However, parents of babies & toddlers be warned : it's quite tricky to navigate with a pushchair! There are 2 lifts in the centre of the mall, but these can take forever to arrive. Also, to get to the Sports Zone on the top level, you need to go outside into the car park if you've got a pushchair - nightmare! If you want to catch the bus from Cascais, it only runs very infrquently, and to get the bus back you have to negotiate loads of steps to cross ...
Advantages: easy to reach from Lisbon, nice for a day out Disadvantages: we didn't find any
locals welcomed by the waiters with a handshake, i.e., not passing tourists who can be offered anything. I´m convinced that the six men were the town council, they just looked it; I hope Cascais is run well, they guzzled litres of red wine during their lunch hour! So, all was well, even if the meal didn´t end with the throwing of fishbones.
One attraction of Cascais is the Boca do Inferno (the Mouth of Hell) out of town on the way to Guincho (a long hike or a short ride by taxi [taxis are not expensive in Portugal]), it´s a rugged rock formation of roofless caverns that roar like the devil himself when the sea is rough or so the locals say, although nobody knows if the devil roars like this or if he roars at all , the sight is quite impressive.
Adeus, Good-bye Cascais, and off to Sintra, we took bus No 417 at the bus station behind ...
