Fox and Hounds Hotel, Okehampton, Dartmoor National Park

...not actually slept in the Fox and Hounds but I’ve spent plenty of time sleeping in their garden and I’d best explain that comment quickly before you imagine im so drunk I cant get home !

The Fox and Hounds has Dartmoor national park right behind it. In a field behind the hotel they allow camping in tents, caravans and motor homes. I’ve spent a fair bit of time eating and drinking inside though.

The Fox and Hounds has Dartmoor national park right behind it. In a field behind the hotel they allow camping in tents, caravans and motor homes. I’ve spent a fair bit of time eating and drinking inside though.
This is a really nice place and it was a hard decision whether or not to add it here. It would be a real shame if get clogged up, because as odd as it sounds for a place on the edge of Dartmoor national park, its not used as much as you would expect.

I suspect the main reason it remains generally reasonable is because a couple of metres from the door runs the A386 road. This is a main road which connects Okehampton and Tavistock and is fairly, though not ridiculously, busy.
I suspect several of you are thinking how dreadful that sounds, thinking about all that road noise and comings and goings. That reaction is why I am sure the Fox and Hounds never gets as full as it should.

So when the traffic starts, its going to wake me up.
So out of bed I get, one bacon sandwich later and we are packing our back packs and getting going.
So we don’t hear the traffic.
We don’t have to worry about driving back if we’ve gone far a field as the Fox is so conveniently situated.
Whenever we get back they are open (virtually , they are only a rural pub hotel after all) the hotel bars are open all day, and serve food all day. they do observe reasonable drinking regulations but they aren’t open all night.
If the weather is terrible its easy to play cards, monopoly or whatever in the bar instead of trying to go out and spraining an ankle etc.
At bedtime everybody is leaving the hotel except those staying there so the noise dies away. Traffic is negligible at night… far better than at home in fact
I would imagine that is very true for the people who stay in the rooms too.

There are service hook-up points for tourers , toilet and a shower block which are adequate

There is a lounge bar and public bar. It also has a skittle alley come function room sometimes used at peak times I gather but I’ve never been there at really peak times. The public bar has a wall painting of hunting scenes apparently made by a German prisoner of war.They allow well behaved dogs and children and the hotel is still under the same management as it was in the 70s

There are two restaurant rooms and meals are also served in all the bar areas so you can always find somewhere to eat. The hotel has both a restaurant and bar menu so you can always have more or less what you want. The food is very good but a bit pricy but not too excessively. You can book for meals. We do (as I’m sure they alert someone if we didn’t return!)

There is a bus stop right outside the Fox and Hounds Hotel if you don’t choose to drive . The number 86 bus provides an hourly service every day (reduced for Sundays). It connects
Barnstaple - Hatherleigh - Okehampton - Fox & Hounds Hotel - Lydford - Tavistock – Plymouth.
Im not going to mention all the things there are in that area Devon has ample tourist websites. There is defiantly something to suit every mood and all sorts of weather even if it at the worst its sitting in a warm and cosy bar while the winds howling and the rain is torrential outside. We always take a few games and you’d be surprised how much fun they can be after a few glasses of cider

I’d definitely recommend this place to folks. It’s near enough for a weekend and there’s not much to loose
