Canal du Midi

Advantages: architectural wonder
Disadvantages: cost many human lives to build

The Canal du Midi, is a man dug canal, situated in the south of France, and joins the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean sea, via the Canal Garonne. The water sources which allow the canal to be constantly navigable, come from the Montagne Noire, (situated in the south west of the Massif Central, near Mazamet, in the Tarn area), by three lakes, and the Saint Ferréol dam. This technical challenge, first imagined in 1539, stayed a project on paper ...
...the first portion of the Canal in 1636, under the reign of Louis XIV. The Saint Ferréol dam was built in 1667, and in 1680, the locks at Béziers, called "Les écluses de Fonseranne" were built. Pierre Paul Riquet died that year, and the very first navigation between Toulouse and Sète happened in 1681, the year following his death. ¤ø,¸¸,◊,¸¸ ,ø¤ Needless to explain the difficulty of the task for the workers who achieved this colossal construction. ...

...and Azincourt between which the battle was fought, still exist and are probably not much bigger than they were then. The area is lost in the hinterland behind the Côte d'Opale, in a network of small villages, farms and lanes far from the usual tourist routes to and from the Channel. Even though I know where it is I always have trouble actually locating it on a map. Hesdin is the nearest big town, and it's to the north of that. "We few, we happy ...
...household was untouched by the battle - fathers, sons, husbands were killed or captured. It is said that the flower of French chivalry was cut down. There were so many dead they had to be tipped into burial pits. Near the battlefield is a monument to them, but, erected in the 19th century, it is unlikely to mark an actual burial spot. Although nicely set in a glade, it is a rather uncared for looking affair, the inscription almost totally effaced. ...

...from classic car racing to Formula 3000. There were also a few porsche races. The main attraction, Formula 1 of course, was really good. There were the 2 practice sessions on Friday, then saturaday morning practice, pre-qualifying and qualifying, then the race itself on sunday. The speed was just incredible and seemed so much faster than watching it on tv. The noise was so loud and i would recommend earplugs to those with sensitive ears, or those ...
...Schumacher drives past! The track itself is one of the best in my opinion, although this view is not shared by many people. It has long fast straights and a nice hairpin and has some good overtaking places. The grandstand we were in, called Est, is one without individual seats, but stone steps (kindov like an ampitheatre) so you had to get there quite early to get a place with a really good view ie of a large part of the track, but wherever you ...

...freedom to be right on the top of a dominating mountain, with a 360° panoramic view over miles and miles of valleys, towns, and forest land. The Pic du Tantajo offers this sensation. From the top of this mountain, you'll see the winding river Orb and afar, the sea, which looks like a mirror reflecting the Mediterranean sunshine. The vineyards trace their neatly aligned branches, wound around their wire supports, giving green and brown striped parcels of land in the summer, and an array of colours in the autumn months.
