Camping at La Bessiere in the summer

Advantages: Good position
Disadvantages: Bit basic

Camping "LA BESSIERE" BLESLE. This year we decided to go on a camping holiday in France. Our destination was Nant in the Midi-Pyrénées Aveyron region. Now it is a long journey by car from Calais as Nant is 957km, 8.40,hours driving without stops, (Michelin route guide) so we decided to break our journey and camp at Blessle in the Auvergne region for a couple of nights . Blessle according to Michelin is 776km and 7 hours 8 minutes drive from Calais. ...
...enough for us on our camping mats and sleeping bags. There was plenty of space for our estate car and our 5 man tent with a porch and an area to sit outside and cook our meal on the camping gaz. Not a huge space but Adequate. There were few trees around the site so although some shade only a little We went on a tour of the small campsite there are only 42 pitches for tents or caravans. Sanitary block ~~~ The toilet/sanitary block was not far ...

Wonderful and Unique Tipi Holidays in France

Advantages: Location, Friendly People, Eco-Friendly Philosophy
Disadvantages: You'll definitely need a car

I stayed at Vacances de Tipi en France in July / August 2009 after finding the site in the Cool Camping guide for France, quite rightly it was in their top 5 list! Basically, the site provides 5 spacious tipis set in private woodlands with indoor provision for cooking / eating etc. The site is based in the largely uncommercial Creuse region of France, between the villages of Ladapeyre and Chatelus Malvaleix, the nearest town being Gueret, around ...
...was the quickest and least expensive ferry crossing, but be aware this was a 7 hour drive! The thing that impressed me most was how much thought had been put into providing just enough facilities to ensure that this was camping without the hassle, whilst remaining true to the natural surroundings and the fact that you really are living in the woods. The tipis are equipped with basic but comfortable furniture, including a futon for sleeping on. This ...

A family friendly French holiday

Advantages: A fun and filled family campsite with fantastic amenities
Disadvantages: We had to leave to go home!

We booked to stay at La Croix du vieux pont as a luxury tenting holiday. I call it luxury as we booked through 'Canvas' who are one of the camping companies available. This basically means that we get to choose our campsite and on arrival the tents will be already assembled and furnished. As we were traveling with eight year old twins and a two month old baby we wanted this trip to be as easy and stress free as possible. We decided that we didn't ...
...area in the Ille de France region was a very good idea & this campsite looked like it was just what we needed. *Arrival & check in* We took the ferry from Calais to Dover (included in the Canvas price) & then had to drive across to Berny Riviere in which the camp site is located. We chose during our journey to avoid as many motorways and toll roads as possible and take in as much scenery and countryside as possible. It was a very pleasant drive and ...

900 years of history

Disadvantages: You'll regret not visiting it

...opinion on the castle of La Couvertoirade, it is preferable that I explain how and why this fortification was built. I will do my best to cut a very long story very short. The Templar Knights Order was established by Hugues de Payns, in 1119 and his companions with the objective to protect pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem, and to defend the city itself. Due to generous donations, they rapidly owned land and property in the west, and formed commanderies ...
...plateau and more particularly at La Couvertoirade in the 12th century. This strategic position allowed easy access to the Mediterranean, and therefore to Jerusalem, but it also offered an agricultural paradise for breeding sheep and horses, and growing wheat. In 1312, when the Templar's are prosecuted and killed, their belongings are left to the Hospitaliers who now rule over the Couvertoirade. The village around the castle counts 800 inhabitants ...

...Carcassonne and back. This is actually possible over one day, if you are brave enough to take two planes in the same day. You can land in the morning, visit the fortified city and fly back in the evening. Alternatively, there are plenty of hotels in and around the fortified city and airport, with a wide price range. So to sum up, its a very small, but useful airport, and thanks to Ryan Air, it provides work for the locals, and has considerably developed ...
