Frankie and Bennys is an Italian restaurant, there are branches all over the country - there is a feature on their website www.frankieandbennys.co.uk - which allows you to enter your postcode and find the nearest one which is good.
I'm very lucky to work just around the corner from Frankie and Bennys, so every now and again a few of us have a night out there.
It is the Frankie and Bennys in York that I visit. It has only been open a few years and I don't know how I coped without it! It is located at Clifton Moor, which can be reached by bus or taxi fairly hassle-free.
It is a nice, clean restaurant, usually quite busy - with helpful friendly staff. As you walk in there is a queue where you stand, if it is busy you get a thing that flashes and vibrates when your table is ready. If it is quiet you can go and have a drink in the bar area and just let someone know when you are ready to be seated.
The restaurant area is non-smoking, but the bar area smoking, which is quite good as people can still smoke without it getting in the way of people eating.
There is a bar menu too is you don't want to have a proper restaurant meal. There are a range of cocktails available, these are quite pricey.
THey sell wine, lager, spirits, cocktails and soft drinks. There is quite a large menu, a range of starters including garlic bread, sou and chicken wings. I would recommend the potato skins with bacon and cheese melted. yummy! Torpedo prawns are also delicious. The starters cost around £3-5.
There is then the main courses. A range of pizzas, pastas, salads and other dishes. I only ever have spaghetti carbonara. It is best. This is spaghetti with bacon in it all tossed in a creamy sauce - lots of parmesan on the top and there you have it - my fave! As this is all I've eaten I can't comment much about other main courses - I know the pizzas are gorgeous from trying other people's. I have also been told last night when we went that New York chicken is great. I don't dare try anything else as carbonara is just too perfect! The pizzas are available in two sizes - which is useful if you can't eat much, or if you're a fat bastard like me! There are special lunchtime menus which is very good value for money. Even the normal menu is reasonably price - my carbonara £6-95. There is a good few things for vegetarians aswell which is good.
Most Main courses are around £5 - 15. There are also side orders available. The portions are quite generous and the menu explains in good detail what is in each dish which is useful.
The food is served quite quickly and all meals at the same time like it should be (I have a big hate of mneals coming all at different times).
Drinks are fairly expensive - a coke is about £1.60 and a pint of Carling £2.70. I say expensive but I suppose it's not too bad for a restaurant. I'm just thinking of compared to the cheap pubs I drink in.
It's facilities are clean and in the York branch you can actually see them cooking your food which I quite like.
There were little shits popping balloons there last night and they nearly got someone elses food over their heads (wouldn't have wasted my own) but I suppose that's not the restaurant's fault
If you let them know that it's someones birthday you get a free milkshake with a sparkler in which is nice!
I always have a great time at frankie and benny's and would give it 10/10. It is open from 12-11pm Monday to Saturday and 12 - 10.30pm Sunday.
