Follow The Red Brick Road

Advantages: walk & see most important historical sites in Boston
Disadvantages: a lot of history, a lot of walking

...
One place the Freedom Trail does not come across is the 'Boston Tea Party Ship and Museum'. This attraction is separate from the trail and currently undergoing restoration and not open to the pubic. But nothing will stop you from taking a detour and popping in to see the ship and museum (once it's open for visitors again).

Next time I'm in Boston I know I will have another look and visit certain sites in more detail. There's ...
...trying to fit everything in and I find it is best to tackle the trail in stages or go back to places you have already been. I like historical graveyards so I will make another bee line to the ones along the trail to study in more depth.

Highly recommended if you don't have much time and want to see as much of Boston's and America's early history in the shortest of time. But don't forget, there's much more to Boston than its history. ... more

Wonderful city

Advantages: Lively, Cultural, Short flight
Disadvantages:

England houses. There are good walking trails around Boston - follow the freedom trail ( denoted by a red line painted on the ground) from Boston Common which leads you around the historic sights. Shopping in Boston is great too, I didn't think it was as cheap as other US destinations, but it's still cheaper than the UK. My best find was a department store called Filene's Basement which sells designer clothes (armani, chanel etc..) at rock bottom prices depending on how long items have been in the shop. There were some really good bargains especially on Calvin Klein and Levis. There are lots of museums around Boston if it's a rainy day - museum of science, computer museum. I will definitely return and recommend Boston for a long or short trip to anyone. ...

Doubletree Downtown Hotel, Washington St, Boston

Advantages: Clean, comfirtable, close to theatres/restaurants/Boston Common/Subway station
Disadvantages: Nearby local hospital with busy ER department

area. The hotel aslo had access to a pool and gym/leisure facilities, but we didn't try them so I can't comment on them. Boston Common and access to the Freedom Trail and other city attractions is about an easy 10 minute stroll from the hotel through the theatre area. Getting to the hotel from the airport is simple, and cheap if you want to take the subway. There is a subway station (N.E. Medical Centre) about 100 metres or so from the hotel front door, and the fare was only $1.25 each from Logan Airport. We were quoted $40-50 for a taxi for the same journey. We felt safe on the subway, and my wife was 6 months pregnant at the time! The only draw-back to this hotel is that it is adjacent to the Tufts/N.E. Medical Centre, and you can get disturbed occasionally by ambulances coming and going with sirens on. However this was only ...

Review of Doubletree Boston-Downtown, Boston

Boston: Top 5 Tips

Advantages: Great quasi-European historical city
Disadvantages: Slightly dull?

Here's my top 5 tips for Boston 1) Do the Freedom Trail. Unlike most American cities, Boston actually has a bit of history too it and they certainly make the most of their revolutionary psat. There is a very easy-to-follow freedom trail which takes you through the most interesting sites (battlefields, ancient ships, museums, hidden churches). It's quite long bt well worth doing. You don't need a guide if you have a good guidebook and sturdy legs; 2) Go to Cambridge. It's just a short hop on the metro to Cambridge and the seat of Harvard Unicersity. It's terribly refined with lovely red-brick buildings, lots of open spaces and serious-looking students. There are also some decent and cheap restaurants. 3) Go to Filene's Basement. This shopping mecca in the centre of town is great for amazing designer baragains. Get there early ...
