Freelander TD4 3 Door Hardback

Advantages: Towing capability, practicality, equipment levels
Disadvantages: body roll, easily damaged interior, awkward hardback, costly insurance

i have found it hard to find a small 4 x 4 that is actually a capable off roader, with towing ability for my horse! In the Freelander i have found a solution to my problem. Since driving a diesel engine Freelander all other small 4 x 4's seem to fade into insignificance. The car itself is well proportioned and especially smart in dark metallic colours, just try to avoid models with the sport bull bars and body kit as these look a litlle too tacky, and ruin the look of the car. If possible aim for an ES model, this is due to the high specification level including leather interior and CD auto changer! The car itself may look small and compact on the outside, but has a big 4 x 4 feel inside, especially when driving! The drive itself is particularly comfortable, the only slight problem i had is there is a slight body rolll ...

2002 Freelander TD4 GS Sportback

Advantages: Very spacious in the front
Disadvantages: Fairly difficult getting in and out of the back seats

Despite what many people say about the reliability of the Freelander, i have never had any problems with it and i have had it for many years. There are many small problems such as when you go round a corner there is a lot of tyre squeel even if you are not going fast, and the habd brake is not the best, but ofer all it is a good car. The hardback is really a waste of money and so is the optional soft top as it is never really used becuase it is just too difficult to use and the hard top is a neiscence. Also if you have the sportback you have trouble getting into the rear seats because of only having three doors & the doors are quite heavy when the car is not parked flat. Another problem with this car is it does have a tendency to stall very easily, and is very hard to reverse because the windows in the back have very large pillars ...

freelander td4 sport 3 door

Advantages: practicality,looks,td4 engine,electric rear window
Disadvantages: lack of 6th gear, needs a bit more go

ultra practical vehicle esp if you have a large German shepherd and a mentalist spaniel to cart around with you too! everything inside is wipe clean and the face lift interior is smart looking and durable too.the manual sunroof is handy although the clips to close it rattle a little.(a little oil helps tho)the air con is very strong cools the cab a treat.it should be noted that climate control isn't available on the freelander 1,just manual air con which doesn't particularly bother me. i like the sport spec as the exterior looks very nice with the big 18 wheels and the handling is surprising good.the suspension is lowered by 30 % on the sport so it corners very well with very little body roll. and a good if not an excellent ride...more than acceptable. the td4 engine is smooth once warmed up (gravelly when cold ...
