Freiburg, die schönste Stadt der Welt, or the most beautiful place in the world, as it has been described. Not only is it a very pretty place, but it is also the hottest place in Germany in the summer. I have visited Freiburg twice as part of an exchange with my school, once in year 10 and the second time, more recently in year 12. Both times I fully enjoyed my experience, and although only I was only there for 7 days both times, we managed to get quite a lot out of the region, one of the highlights being the trip to the Europaprk, a theme park not too far away from the city centre.
Europapark can be reached from the main train station in Freiburg through a bus service (that's how we got there anyway) and the journey does not last too long, probably around half an hour. The theme park is divided into 'countries', with each country in Europe having a section filled with rides, attractions shops and restaurants. The highlights for me were Silverstar in France and Fjord-Rafting in Scandanavia (perfect for cooling down on a hot day). There are plenty of rides and attractions to suit everyone here, and also hotels in some countries, such as in Spain and Italy.
Freiburg city centre is filled with cobbled streets, Bächle (little streams) and shops, as well as the historice Münster and Schwarbentor. Also, watch out for the trams and see if you can discover the crocodile in the river. At night, many of the teenagers of Freiburg can be found at the river banks of the Dreisam, where a Dreisamufercafe can be found. There is also a sandpit here, where families could take their children to play during the day. I've heard the night life is great, but be careful what you wear on your feet - heels are NOT recommended due to the cobbled streets. Freiburg is also the most environmentally friendly and cleanest place in Germany, with excellent public transport facilities, and no cars at all in the city centre. Make sure you try the ice creams!!! Both times I went to Freiburg, I went in the summer, when Germany were in the football - first the world cup and then Euro 2008. The Germans are mad on football too, so when they took us to puvlic viewings we experienced an amazing atmosphere where they all taught us the German football songs and encouraged us to join in. If there is a football match playing expect to see a mass of red yellow and black wherever you go!
Many other places can be visited from Freiburg with little effort, for example, you can take a train to the Black Forest and visit Titisee for the day, or visit Strasbourg or Colmar in France or Basel in Switzerland. All of these places can easily be reached by train from Freiburg city centre.
I stayed at peoples houses both times I went, but there are plenty of hotels in Freiburg if you can't crash at someone's house! If you are near St. Georgen at any time, make sure you visit the freibad (only in summer). It's an outdoor pool with plenty of place to laze around, play football or volleyball and there's a little refreshment place too.
For me, there were no negatives, not even on the last day when it rained, quite heavily! But if you do want to take a trip to Freiburg, it's best to have a knowledge of some German as many people do speak English, but your life would be so much easier if you could attempt to use some German. The food may be an issue for some people too, as a lot of what is offered is traditional German food, particularly sausage. I would recommend that you try it though, but if the local specialities don't agree with you, you can always find alternatives nearby.
