Fuengirola Zoo is not at all what you're expecting. It is so much better than that. The word "Zoo" certainly has negative connotations for many of us, small cages, mistreated wildlife living in conditions which are totally alien to their natural environment. I am happy to say this is not true of Fuengirla Zoo.
Easy to find and well sign-posted from the main bus station Fuengirola Zoo is a tucked away jem waiting to be discovered. With levels of interest for all ages, even for people who think they don't like zoos. I cannot stress enough ow strongly i would advise paying the zoo a visit!
With regular tours and incredibly helpful staff the zoo can be an anjoyable and educational visit for all the family. On our visit we were lucky enough to be intime for the meercat talk. This talk takes you inside the enclosure where you can get as close as you like to the adorable critters (but please no touching!). Myself and my partner were the only english guests on the tour, but this did not phase our fantastic guide who explained everything to us in english as she was going along.
The environments are recreated as acurately as possible to the real thing for the animals, and you get the opportunity to see so many animals in their "natural environment".
Fuengirola Zoo was an amazing day out, the walk around the zoo was beautiful with plenty of places to stop and relax in that spanish sun, with play-areas for children. Each enclosure has signs informing the visitor about the animal, and explaining how the area was created. I get the impression that this zoo will improve and imporve and i sincerely hope i get the opportunity to revist at some point in the future. Your ticket allow you to get in for half price the next time you visit! (Although i'm not sure this will still be valid by the time i manage to get back out there!)
Opening and closing times vary year round, and I am lead to believe that there are even moonlight walks at some times in the year! Entrance will cost around ten euros, though you could spend the whole day there, as there are picnic areas and themed restaurant/cafes too.
Although if your children are anything like the ones in my family I'm sure their favourite part of the whole Zoo will be the gift shop- let them know that this one will not disappoint!
