Fuerteventura - Wonderful family destination

Advantages: Great weather all year round. Gentle cooling breeze, lots to do.
Disadvantages: You have to come home!

...the gorgeous sunny island of Fuerteventura - one of the Canary Islands. I travelled with my 2 children ages 10 and 7yrs old, and we all had a wonderful time. I will try to do some justice to this beautiful island in this review.

I did manage to visit Coralejo on the North of the Island (around 40mins by bus from Caleta) to the Water park - Baku. This was a good day out for the children but beware as there are height restrictions for some of the slides and this was a little disappointing for my daughter as she ... more

...we could travel, in either Fuerteventura or Portugal, and Fuerteventura came up tops. We were looking for a quiet relaxing holiday, with reasonable, even if not luxury, accommodation and a decent resort with good restaurants but no noisy clubs! (Far too old for that now). I also wanted named accommodation, not accommodation on arrival. I eventually settled on a holiday with JMC, staying at the Fuerteventura Beach Club Resort, at Caleta de Fuste ...
...The Cat Population ------------------------- Fuerteventura has a problem with feral cats. They are everywhere, and there were plenty in our resort. They are trying to deal with this, by asking people not to feed them, (there are feeding areas set up, where cats can get catfood and water) and encouraging people to bring non-neutered cats back to the Cat Protection People, to have the op. This seems to be controlling the population. The cats hang ...

Crashing out in Corralejo

Advantages: Peaceful, tranquility at it's best
Disadvantages: not much for teenagers

...holiday, look no further. Fuerteventura is now firmly established as a tourist retreat. So what can this island offer you?. Why bother taking a four hour flight? The landscape of this island is to be frank, quite baron, Fuerteventura itself is a volcano, or rather it was, erupting some 10, 000 years ago, forming the island as it now is. Looking around at the lanscape you can clearly see where rivers of malten larva once ran down it's slopes. Over ...
...for some windsurfing lessons!! Fuerteventura has its own airport with most flights arriving from the Uk on wednesdays, if you have hired a car in advance, you will be able to pick up your keys at the airport, you can also hire one there and then provided you have the right paperwork. Watch your speed, the police there are very intollerent of people speeding and besides theres goats wandering loose all over this island so you have to be careful. ...

...following morning at 6:30 to Fuerteventura so I booked it and we started packing. Cost counting transfer fees plus ticket at airport came to £419 and of course that included insurance. At 2:30 approx we set off for the airport and at 3:00 this blissful trip to the Canaries was interrupted by a puncture which was my 1st in this 5-year-old car. To cut a long story short I will be forever grateful to the passing Samaritan who shone her headlights on ...

The Quiet Canary Island

Advantages: Quiet, charming, friendly and not too comercialised
Disadvantages: Might not be enough to do for kids

...that you are going to Fuerteventura they will ask you "where's that?" Those that have heard of the island and have never been there will tell you that its windy; and it is. However, this is not Blackpool sea front in November windy. In the off-season when temps are in the seventies/eighties the wind can make it feel a little colder than it is but temperatures are still very high in our winter months. During the summer, temperatures can reach up to ...
...just south of Lanzarote. Fuerteventura has four main resorts: Corralejo in the north of the island; Caleta de Fuste in the middle and closest to the airport and the neighbouring resorts of Playa Jandia and Costa Calma located in the south. Correlejo is the main and busiest resort but none of the island's four resorts are particularly lively. Those seeking an abundance of night clubs, bars and alcohol should look to one of the other Canary Islands. ...

Disadvantages: a lot of cats if you don't like them, windy

...wind. Not for nothing is Fuerteventura called “the isle of winds.” On the popular beaches, there are permanent “windbreakers”, created out of stone which can be fairly jam packed as everyone tries to keep out of the wind. The wind blows all day, every day, all night, every night, and you should be aware that it will drop the temperature down a few degrees. It was also cloudy for the first few days of our holiday, but for the ...

Getting Around: Car hire is cheap in the Canaries but as neither my partner nor myself can actually drive – we had to depend on our feet, buses and taxis. There is a very reliable bus service that goes to all the major villages and cities. The bus drivers don’t ...

Kids entertained for 11hrs, Is that possible?

Advantages: Good legroom, Surprisingly good inflight meals, wide selection of entertainment, friendly crew
Disadvantages: As flying in Premium I went into Economy and it looked cramped, although I can not properly say!!!

If I choose any airline to fly to any European destination I will always try to book and fly with Monarch Airlines, as I have flown with them numerous amounts of times to Kefalonia, Zante, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Spain, Portugal and sometimes even long haul to the Maldives. My recent flight was actually to the Maldives, as well as flying Monarch I am also a keen and frequent flyer with Emirates and I would usually fly with them on my holidays as of the stopover in Dubai however, Monarch does not, unfortunately offer this option. We booked via the tour operator, Kuoni, which I would also highly recommend for far away holidays. And we upgraded to Premium Cabin which was a delightful experience for a a few hundred pounds more but for a totally different experience during the eleven hour flight. The crew have always been pleasant ...

PUERTO RICO - Gran Canaria

Advantages: great weather, excellent beach, lively resort
Disadvantages: very hilly resort, may be a bit tourist-orientated for some

As it's that time of year when everyone starts flicking through the brochures to find their summer holiday destination, so I thought I'd review Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria which was our destination last September. Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands (after Tenerife and Fuerteventura), and although owned by Spain, is just over 200km from the north coast of Africa, which explains its climate. The north and south of the island do experience differences however, with the north more cloudy and cooler than the hot south. We picked Puerto Rico, a resort on the southern coast. The flight from Cardiff took approximately 3 1/2 hours. Driving into Puerto Rico, the first thing that becomes apparent is that the resort is built into a huge valley in the mountains. Hotels have been built all the way up to the top ...

Hotel Costa Caleta - Didn't Costa Fortune

Advantages: Modern, Clean, Close to amenities and beach.
Disadvantages: Bored with food, poorly staffed in bars,

My summer holiday of 2008 was spent in Fuerteventura and my hotel of choice was the Hotel Costa Caleta. The hotel is also known by its former name Hotel Ocean Costa Caleta. Address is Av. Alcalde Juan Ramón Soto Morales Caleta de Fuste Fuerteventura Spain Tel:+34-928547550 I'm not sure if the hotel offers any car parking facilities as I hadn't needed any. It's a 3 star rated hotel and is quite modern and situated quite centrally in the resort of Costa Caleta (or Caleta de Fuste, or Castillo as it is also known) Only a short 10-15 mins transfer time from the airport. It has over 300 rooms. It was built in 2005 so is still quite new. The hotel is only about 5-10 mins walk (5km) from the beach and the shops and parks are all nearby too. They do have internet facilities with 2 PC's in the lobby with pay to use internet ...
